Thank you for a good overview of heat pump quotes. HG charged me £450 for a heat survey, a couple of years ago. You are fortunate - no rad changes, no new hot water cylinder. HG quoted me 19.5k for a bungalow, 12k with the grant. I wanted to use someone who knew what they were doing, and could stand by it, but I feel they were jacking up the price due to the grant. When I said it was expensive, I was told, you have a grant to help. I still think they would do a good job.

I got a quote a from Octopus pre the grant scheme and it was just over £6k as soon as the grant scheme came into play I got a quote again and it was still £6k. They are defintly profiting from it. I ended up going with air con instead for £7500 for 5 indoor units and 3 outdoor heat pumps. I am looking into just water heating atm.

I think minimum disruption is the way to go. If you want to check out the ability of rads and HW cylinder to heat at lower temperatures, try dropping the flow temperature on your gas boiler whilst adjusting your heating program. I’m currently running 1970 steel panels at 50 degC, down from 60 degC. As I have a condensing boiler, this also improves the boiler efficiency. An important aspect of heat pumps is the type of refigerant used, as R290 for example, enables higher flow temperatures to be used for a given SCOP target, thus allowing fewer rads to be altered - and in our house the existing 170 litre hot water cylinder worked also worked fine. With respect to size of heat pump required for your house, make use of smart gas data to check out gas consumption on the coldest days of the year, checking on-line what the local outside temperatures actually were. Bear in mind that the heat pump size for say -3 deg C assumes that temperature for the whole day. Depending on where you live that could be quite rare. If you can achieve the comfort level you require for your house with GCH, then the gas consumption on the coldest days provides a valuable starting point for the size of heat pump likely required, allowing for the efficiency of your current boiler and the stated efficiency of the proposed heat pump. You are also then well prepared to compare the running costs of GCH vs heat pump for your house. Because of the high costs of electricity compared to gas, you may find the savings with a heat pump are not as large as you might expect, which means any cost not covered by the BUS grant should come under greater scrutiny.

Get an Airton system. I did my farmhouse in France ( big farmhouse) for €5000. They come with the connecting pipes already charged. It was easy! Hardest part was making the holes in the wall. 45 cm 18 inches.

Nice video, and good to see the Heat Geeks keeping it real -- it's where I'd go for sure! IIRC not only does it cost more for an oversized heat pump, but it will also cycle more & reduce its lifespan as a result. Definitely in the 'measure twice, cut once' category!
