On a recent trip to N Wales from.Sw England we drove 560 miles over three days at a total cost £48 mostly on public chargers, courtesy of Tesla supercharger membership and some off peak charging.

Did you factor in that in Glasgow and Edinburgh there are low emission zones that you would have to pay a penalty to enter in many petrol & diesel vehicles? I find that Arnold Clark charging is very good value and convenient. If you had gone much further west than Castle Douglas you would have found charges a bit more scarce.

I love that multiple businesses are now doing super cheap charging. Arnold Clark are 51p with octopus and 150kwh chargers. And my parents live next to a ChargePlace Scotland at 41p for 11kwh chargers. So these days my away from home charging is convenient and cheaper than petrol. 400 mile journeys are now 6p a mile for myself.

Very few Tesla chargers here in the South of England. I found the best price is BE.EV subs, £4.99 a month get s you 49p KwH 24/7 and £9..99 drop it further to 39p!!

Worth noting that for EV owners without home charging likely wouldn’t use rapid ionity charging. Lamppost charging is available in many places at 44p/kWh which is perfect for overnight charging and would come in at about 13p/mile

I did multiple Scotland trips (from Kent) with my EV which are reported with videos on my channel and saved a lot on fuel cost. With a little bit of planning diesel cannot even come close!

Good comparison Nic. If all goes to plan, we’ll be driving from S Wales to Outer Hebrides next year in an EV. Planned on taking out an IONITY subscription.

We’re currently up here in a diesel CX-5. As the kids get older you’ll need more stuff btw. So we’ve got a roof box on for the fishing gear, barbecue, wetsuits etc. That takes its toll on the economy. But that’ll be the same with the EV. Unless I leave the OH behind. 🤔😂

The price of public charging is scary! but at least the infrastructure is improving at a rapid pace 😉
Like you said, if you can charge from home, the proportion of public charger use can be restricted to these long road trips. I went to Devon a few weeks ago and convenience + reliability was worth paying for

  • @iansinclair7581 · 2 months ago

Arnold Clark is cheaper than most. In Scotland you might be better looking for an Arnold Clark charger as there fewer Tesla chargers around. 55p at my local garage.

Last autumn we took our Tesla Model Y from the Midlands to the south coast to pick up the mother in law, stopped overnight back at home, recharged overnight, drove to Gretna Green, used the supercharger whilst having dinner.
Next day drove to Inverness where they have Superchargers in a town carpark.
Toured around for a week, stopping back at Inverness when necessary.
Second week based near Perth, Supercharger at nearby services. Toured around again.
Travelled south, dropped MiL off and returned home.
2,500 miles in 2 weeks. Total electricity cost £190.

We planned our journey to use superchargers. Yes, I waited some of the stops, but generally the car was ready long before the 82 year old MiL.

The same trip in our CX-5 at 42 mpg would have cost £384.

Plus no complications or aggravation with apps or cards or chargers that don't work. In a Tesla you turn up, plug in and go do what you want to do.

By the way, I'm just about to start a new job with sites in South Wales, near Glasgow and Manchester. I wouldn't consider it if I wasn't driving a Model Y.

Just down the road from the Ionity chargers in Carlisle is a much much cheaper Arnold Clark Charging hub with 8x 150kW Kempower chargers. 51p/kW with Electroverse discount. Free coffee / tea and spotless toilets in the Hyundai showroom
I used to use the Ionity on my way from Stirling to Yorkshire and back in my Countryman SE
