I struggled my whole life with something as far as I’ve known. Didn’t know what it was. Told I have potential, need to try harder… took hours to do homework each night(compared to classmates it would take them 1/4-1/2 the time). Parents were frustrated with me… they’d all say she’s very smart, just so pokey (slow paced). I went to college to get into HR, was doing well enough then burnt out and that ended my career. I was diagnosed as having Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), some time after that, which kind of made sense but didn’t quite explain it all. Went to school again and became a Psychiatric Nurse… I wasn’t supported in my role and was picked on by my peers. I left that field too as I didn’t feel confident enough and couldn’t get the help. I still didn’t know what was wrong with me. It broke my heart that I couldn’t be in nursing anymore because of the environment…. I wasn’t diagnosed with adhd until 4 or so years after that at the age of 41.
I still can’t believe that even through psych nursing school ADHD wasn’t really talked about much, especially not for females.
I still feel like a failure even though I know what’s wrong. I’m in Canada and have been looking for HRT to help but my doctor doesn’t know enough to prescribe it and has referred me but it’s a 8-12 month wait. I’ve reached out to other locations which are also full…
The medical field is so behind in Canada it’s frustrating.
Also all along… my mom doesn’t really believe me that I could have ADHD. She doesn’t believe HRT will help me lose weight and have more energy, support my joints, help my brain fog…
I only work part time because I’m like an exhausted pigeon. So I don’t make a lot of money either.
It’s been a rough go at life.

Thanks to anyone who’s read my rambling and made it this far. Not sure what my point is other than sharing how frustrating this is.

It’s the injustice of the whole thing that makes you angry

My parents would never have even asked the school, they still don't believe ADHD is real. It's just a discipline or moral failing. I'm middle-aged 🤷🏼

Not so long ago and we would have just been diagnosed with hysteria in these situations😢

I was diagnosed at 53 and I went through menopause at 52. I am now 54. I thought I was losing my ever-lovin mind! I had to have answers because I could not control the mood swings and angry outbursts. Getting tested made sense to try and explain what was wrong with me. I feel betrayed by the medical community for suffering like this my entire life since I was 13. I am still trying to figure out a medication regiment to keep me sane and stabilize my mood swings!
Everything Dr. Wall discussed hit me so hard! Thank you for this interview! I feel seen and heard ❤

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 26. I'm 47 now. I'm female. My ADHD has only gotten worse the older I've gotten, esp with perimenopause. I remember trying to tell my doctor back in 2007 that when I was in my period my meds didn't work as well. He seemed confused. This is so frustrating! I'm glad that it's FINALLY being recognized. I lived life in hard mode for so long.

I remember as a tiny girl thinking nobody liked me and nobody cared. A life time of thinking I had weirdo tattooed on my forehead, depression, serious anxiety to the point I had seizures. I finally worked out what it all is and I’m 60 and quite exhausted by it. RSD for sure. I now feel better because I research and I am working out how to make life better.

I am 67 years old. Just went on Social Security. I was born in 1958. The first time I heard of ADHD was when my best friend from second grade had her first child diagnosed in elementary school, in the 1980s.

I did not get diagnosed until Covid I spent my whole life being told that I had “SO MUCH potential” and implying that I wasn’t living up to it.

I can’t tell you how many times I found myself in some situation or another or people were asking me why I had done something that wasn’t logical to them, and I would just cry and say “I don’t know.” The last time it happened to me. I think I was 21.

I wonder how my life would have gone if I knew it wasn’t my fault. I will never know.
