I always thought I was a chameleon because of my ability to adapt to different situations and with different people, never realised it was disassociation

God the shame we carry that has been given to us so unfairly throughout life has caused so much harm

My earliest rejection was at age 2 when I climbed onto my dad’s lap (he was looking at a book or magazine) and received no reaction/acknowledgment that I was even there. It’s my earliest memory of feeling invisible. At about the same age I fell down the stairs and bumped my head on the concrete basement floor. I cried but no one came. I learned very early that my needs didn’t matter. The years of work on myself have helped tremendously, but it’s a constant effort!

I experienced this.... I got CPTSD from Narcissistic abuse ❤.... and PTSD from a rape. I am Autistic and have ADHD.
Honestly, this was my life!.... I was told I was stupid constantly!

I did so much unlearning and Healing!
Good to hear some one talking about this!
I had to figure it out for myself while I came through the Irish homeless system with no family support!

Ella is brilliant. She covered SO much here. I found myself nodding the whole way through. And Alex, you have such a nice way about you as an interviewer/conversationalist. You ask the best questions and you are a great active listener. And the podcast always has such great quality guests who have such humility. I'm in Australia and I can honestly say we do not have discourse or locally-made content that even comes close to this.

Now I understand why I have high cortisol levels! I’m constantly under stress and weight gain, anxiety, anger, constantly rejected, by men, family, my father, my brother! It’s soo painful and we internalize it!

For a lot of folks, their parents are their first bullies.

    Trauma (Internal Family Systems) I.F.S.
The 3 layers idea.

1. The Exiles: shame, vulnerability, (all the things we don’t want people to see about us).

2. The Protectors: control, anxiety, might be the extroverted self stepping up to hide the shame & vulnerability.

3. Managers: sometimes they’re a bit more maladaptive so they can be anger, OCD type level of control.

4. The Firefighters (the things we use to escape): alcohol, drugs, netflix, shopping, money, etc.

We don’t remove parts of ourselves, we accept them as a part of our “internal family” but we just unblend them a little bit and look at them with the eyes of compassion. And we go to the core self (higher self so to speak or the version of us that we were born with before we had to develop different version of ourselves to either survive trauma, ADHD, or neurodivergence.

Look at all these parts as a version of you that is allowed to be there.

Dissociation. Trauma abuse- acting like everything is fine the next day. Not processing anything. Bad for your future and relationships including work etc.

It’s a version of you that shows up in certain situations- and if the version of you that shows up isn’t detrimental to you- then that is a version of you that you need to accept.

Masking vs: versions of yourself. Is it the mask or just the 10th version of yourself instead of the 3rd? If it’s not manageable then we need to look at “lifestyle” instead of “the mask”. (54.36)

Masking vs Butterfly 🦋

At about 12 I had a nasty fall off my bike. I was on my own and went over the handlebars. I never told anyone. As an adult this has puzzled me until now. At 15 I was beaten up by a stranger and told no one. My father was a bully and my mother didn’t care. Sad.
