I Grew Supermarket Potatoes — Was It Worth It?

I Grew Supermarket Potatoes — Was It Worth It? 🥔 It’s finally time to harvest the potatoes! This year I decided to grow several different varieties, including potatoes bought from Morrisons, Aldi and Lidl, alongside proper seed potatoes — and the results were VERY mixed! 😂 I wanted to see just how well supermarket potatoes could actually grow compared with seed potatoes, and today we’re digging everything up to see what we’ve got. First up were two rows of Picasso potatoes, and honestly… I was absolutely delighted with the harvest! 😍🥔 The yield was huge and they produced a fantastic amount of potatoes. Next came a row of Sarpo Mira seed potatoes. The yield wasn’t quite what I was hoping for compared with the Picasso, but they still produced a good, healthy crop with no major problems. Then it was time for two rows of Maris Piper potatoes from Morrisons. These were alright, but the results weren’t quite as impressive as the Picasso. I also found some potatoes with holes in them, as though something had been feeding on them underground. Then came the Aldi Melody potatoes… and these were a COMPLETE DISASTER! 😂🥔 Very few potatoes had actually developed, and I only ended up with a handful from the row. I’m wondering whether something like a growth inhibitor used on supermarket potatoes may have affected them, although I can’t say for certain that’s what caused the poor growth. After that I had another row of Picasso potatoes that I’d planted with some spare seed potatoes — and once again, they produced a really nice crop! Finally, I harvested the Osprey potatoes from Lidl, and I was pleasantly surprised by these. They produced a nice crop and the potatoes looked very similar to the Picasso, with those lovely little red/pink markings on the skins. So after harvesting all these different varieties, which potato came out on top? And more importantly… ARE SUPERMARKET POTATOES ACTUALLY WORTH GROWING? 🥔🤔 You’ll have to watch until the end to find out! If you’ve ever planted potatoes bought from Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons or another supermarket, let me know in the comments how they performed for you. I’d love to know whether you’ve had better results than I did! 🌱 Thanks for watching and supporting Jake the Gardener!
