I truly think you may have drastically increased your harvest if you actually dug deeper. You seemed to only take what was basically on the top of the soil.

I accept the lazy way to grow potatoes, but I'm struggling to understand this lazy way to harvest them. Surely there's a few more to be had if you just dug a little deeper?

I would have dug down a bit more sd you found a few deeper at the start

About 15 years ago I helped a friend clear out some stables when she was moving to a new yard.

In addition to a vast amount of horse manure, we cleared enough used straw to cover one of my potato beds.

The seed potatoes were already planted with the soil lightly drawn into ridges before covering with 300mm? of straw and they grew well with a nice clean easy to harvest crop.

I recall thinking that initial minor ridging helped eliminate greening.

I grow mine in buckets every year and the harvests aren’t too bad, however during the winter months when I chuck peelings and not so nice looking potatoes on my “wild flower/shrub area” the potatoes in that area are miles better than my bucket harvests. This happens each year and it amazes me Jim. I don’t do a thing to them other than chuck my chicken bedding straw all over that area to breakdown. My garden has never been so good with rich soil in the 3 years I’ve had my chickens. ❤❤

I grow all my potatoes like this. Generally get a really good harvest. I use a mix of straw and grass clippings and add more as the year goes on.

This year I used potato sacks, seed potatoes at the bottom, top up to the brim with compost, no earthing. First harvest of Arran Pilots not bad at all. Will today harvest my Jazz potatoes. Fingers crossed.

I did similar a few years ago in a wooden raised bed.

I had a lot of grass clippings and straw that I mixed together and planted into.

It was a bit of an experiment and I was very surprised that it actually worked.

There were bigger potatoes under the soil surface that I almost missed.
