  At <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi4eCiqmzu0&amp;t=68">1:08</a> he said he did not control watering and they were most watered by the rain and occasional hose waterings. Considering that pots dry out so fast, my guess is that lack of water during hot weather was the cause of the failure.

  I grew potatoes in a bale of hay!!! We got an incredible amount of potatoes and it was so easy!!

  I grow potatoes in 30 litre black bags. What I’ve found is they need to be constantly moist until a week or two before you harvest. If it doesn’t rain you need to be soaking each bag every 3 days. With the heat we have been having I’ve been doing it everyday. Harvested a bag two days ago and there were lots. I put four seeds potatoes per bag.

  We planted potatoes in a raised bed 5 years ago… we haven’t replanted them since. Every year the ones we missed last year pop right up.

  One important difference between your raised bed and 30 litre buckets is the colour. &nbsp;The buckets being black absorbs the heat from the sun much more than the pale green colour of the raised bed. &nbsp;This will dry out the buckets faster.

  I&apos;ve been getting a lot of very small potatoes (from buckets) this year and have been struggling to keep them watered in the heat. I agree with those in the comments who mention the need to keep them moist, especially in the run up to harvesting. I think the raised bed is probably much more efficient at retaining water and that&apos;s what is making the difference. Seeing this, I&apos;m motivated to try them in raised beds next year.

  Those in the raised bed went deep and found the decomposing horse manure and less extreme hot/dry like the buckets. Consistent temp and moisture plus the fertilizer gave the beds the advantage. EXCELLENT YEILD SIR!

  In Sweden, we prefer to plant directly in the ground. First, create ridges or furrows and cover the potatoes with soil. When the tops emerge, hill them up again to cover the lower stems. You can do this three times to build up a good mound of soil around the plant, leaving fewer leaves exposed. Then, cover the area with grass clippings if you want an extra-large harvest; straw is another good option for mulching. This method also makes harvesting the potatoes easier. You can use this technique in raised beds too, provided you set aside some soil at the start to use for hilling up later in the season. Good luck! /Therés from Sweden
