When I was at school 70 yearsago, I used to play with a lad whose dad had a big house with big lawns. We spent many happy afternoons mowing the lawns with one of these Atcos.

In the 1920s garden gnomes used to operate the mowers , hence the low handlebars.
This was prior to the tragic petrification event that turned all gnomes to stone.

Our neighbour a Mr Beasley, (a patient of my dad, Doctor Erskine), of the Turrets in Oldfield Lane opposite the Litten Hotel, had an identical machine. Every time he started it I would rush out and watch him mow in a thick haze of two stroke. Wonderful sound. One day he lost control and was dragged across grass smashing into our fence. I was obsessed with this mower but I wasn't allowed to use it! It set me off on my love of all things engines and mechanics.

In 1975 I started a 5 year apprenticeship with a company called Henry S Tetts, in Faversham in Kent. I spent the 1st year in the horticultural workshop and the next 4 year's in the agricultural workshop, and during the year I with an guiding of a chap called Dick Sales, who was in is last year befor retirement. We worked on a couple of the bigger Atcos and the comparable big Dennis mowers, of which both machines came with a rear roller with a seat where the operator sat, and would drive the machine, most common place to see this type of machine was cricket grounds, I was to lean of many types of mower, such as
Lawn tennis mowers, grave yard mowers for be graves, gang mowers towed behind a small tractor
Really enjoy the videos, best wishes
Adrian

How I love an old Atco! Mine dates from 1950, I inherited it from my dad, who bought it second hand in the 60’s,12” cut, 50cc Villiers 4 stroke pull start, I’ve used it since the 90’s and it’s still going strong and always starts, makes me wonder how much money I’ve saved not bothering with modern rubbish ones, sounds like an old motorbike and does a lovely cut! Manual clutch lever and throttle, it’ll outlast me, real quality piece of British engineering I truly appreciate.😉🤠👍

One of the most enjoyable shed videos ever! I have a 1921 oval frame Atco, one of the first 900 made. It does cut superbly, but is quite fast for the older gentleman to walk behind. I do find that it helps to drain oil from the crankcase now and again, to stop the plug oiling up. Now let's see the Zenith up and running.....

i can see the passion that drives Shed Racing and what a historic specimen that has each parts so well made with numbers, names cast into the individual parts. Love machines like that.
