If there is one thing we Germans deeply respect, it is a formidable adversary. HMS Warspite certainly belonged to this category like only very few others, giving us no end of trouble through two world wars.<br>I'd love to go to Portsmouth and see her on exhibition beside Nelson's Victory where she belongs, but alas, the Grand Old Lady Of The Fleet is no more.

A friend's father served on the Warspite in WW2 in the mass dive bomber attacks by the Germans off the north coast of Crete my friend's father was mortally wounded. The friend still grieves this loss.

My father was a marine gunner joseph Terence Reay he was a gunner at the battle of Narvik where the Warspite sunk 12 German destroyers and 2 Cruesers and he was in this action also aged 23

The Italian admiral deserved better than he was to receive, he wasn't a bad leader, he just knew it was a losing battle in every respect.

Warspite was comprehensively updated in the 1930s and was one of the best regarded dreadnoughts in the Royal Navy

Possibly the biggest crime against our military history is that we didn’t preserve our finest ever ship as a museum.

A road in Cherbourg was renamed RUE de WARSPITE in her honour.A friend,ex gunnery officer,proudly displayed a copy of that road sign on his house in Southsea,Portsmouth,U.K. Fine ship, even finer crew.R.N.at it's best!

Also, I really liked the account of the refit, especially the added deck armour. Pity there (apparently) wasn't the time or money to do it for Hood.
