  If I ever find myself in an aircraft evacuation and someone tries to bring their luggage, there will be some additional serious injuries.

  Flying into a thunderstorm is the third most terrifying thing that I can think of while flying as a passenger. Second is the silent loss of pressurization (like that Helios flight), and first is an inflight fire.

  I haven’t thought about “dew point” since I retired 11 years ago.  It was a very important value in my job which was to test, set and control the various air and gas flows in fossil fuel electric generating plants for a large utility.  Efficiency is everything in generating electricity as the company hates burning extra fuel to generate the electrical power supplied to customers.

  My dad and I took a flight from Newark to Denver in July 2010. I wouldn't have even thought it was possible, but it was somehow solid thunderstorms the entire way. It was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced. The turbulence was unreal; it felt like the plane was moving in every possible direction. It was extremely dark in the middle of the day. Luggage bins popped open, flight attendants were falling to the floor, people were screaming. Fortunately, everything turned out okay, but it took a few days before my anxiety settled down. My dad had a long corporate career that required a lot of travel, so he'd been on hundreds of flights before, and he says that was the only time he's ever felt afraid in an airplane.

  I have terrible flying luck. When I was a child we fly over a tornado. I remember thinking we were on a roller coaster and laughing. Everyone around me were looking at me like I was crazy…I was 4. Then when I was 8 I was flying by myself toward SAT and we got struck by lightening. Diverted to New Orleans. Bad luck. When I was 17 going out of Boston our flight was on the runway and the pilots stopped the takeoff three times going down the runway. That was scary. I’ve been in a few go around which are also scary. I try not to fly anymore for the safety of others. 😅

  I'll mention it so people don't have to research it, the PHL plane is gone. Sat there for so many years the protective covers were ravaged by the weather by the time they finally dealt with it. Drove by it all the time going to work.

  That Air France flight really hit home for me. I was flying the same route that day on a different airline and we did divert to Montreal because of the storms. The turbulence before we diverted was getting pretty bad. I was expecting it over the Maritimes (I’ve never had a smooth flight over Newfoundland, whether coming or going, it’s always bumpy there), but not so much once we got to the Great Lakes.<br><br>I remember several passengers grumbling after the captain announced his decision (I was NOT one of them, I understood the stakes). <br><br>Once we arrived in Montreal and got into the terminal, we heard about what had happened to the Air France flight that tried to land in the storm at Toronto. Most of the people who were bitching about the diversion shut up in a heckuva hurry. And there were a lot of shocked, pale faces in the crowd.<br><br>It was pretty obvious everyone was thinking about how that could have been us instead. And that freaked a lot of people out, especially since when we first heard the news, nobody knew that the passengers and crew fortunately all escaped with their lives. We were just told an Air France flight had gone off the runway at Pearson and crashed. I think most of us were assuming the worst. Clearing customs felt like being at a funeral.<br><br>Serious props to that Air France cabin crew for a job well done.
