It slips by very quickly, but Thornhill gets mistaken for Kaplan when he calls over the waiter just as the waiter is asking for George Kaplan. The thugs watching were curious to see who would answer and assumed that Thornhill was Kaplan when he looked like he was answering the call.

Fun fact…Hitchcock wanted to do a movie where an ordinary man was forced to live out a James Bond situation. When Hitch was approached about filming the actual first Bond film….he said “ I already made it…..it’s called North by Northwest”

"The 39 Steps" - 1935, an early Hitchcock gem!

A few commenters have already remarked that this film is "the original James Bond 007 film." They're dead right: "North by Northwest" happened to come out at exactly the right historical moment. Among the public who saw it in theaters, were two men who would ultimately secure the film rights to make 'Bond' pictures: Harry Saltzman and 'Cubby' Broccoli. While they wanted to do the Bond character (of the Ian Fleming novels) justice, they were still trying to imagine what kind of film series they wanted to make. They saw how "North by Northwest" was a smash hit, studied the film, and chose to incorporate many of its elements into the Bond films: A handsome, sharp protagonist who is a survivor, able to take advantage of even the most hopeless situation; exotic locations, breathtaking women, 'spy gadgets and useful props' (N.B.N. had microfilm, a thrown knife, and a matchbook with writing; Bond would have Bond gadgets)... and a protagonist often walking a tightrope between his own government agency, and the organization of bad guys. So in a way, this one film spawned 26-plus sequels: "James Bond, Directed by Alfred Hitchcock!"

4:13 The bad guys had "George Kaplan" paged because he was supposedly a guest at the hotel. At the same time, Roger called for the page boy because he wanted to send a message. The bad guys thought Roger was responding to the page.

Cary Grant. One of Icons the Golden Age of Film ! I loved him in Notorious, To Catch a Thief, Charade, and other dramas, but REALLY loved him in two comedies... Operation Petticoat and Father Goose. He could do it all !!!

The "abrupt" ending is absolute perfection.

Cami, you really have to pay close attention at the beginning of Hitchcock movies. He often sets up the entire film with something subtle in the beginning of his films. In this movie, he calls for the restaurant employee so that he can send a telegram to his mother, but it is at the same time that the employee is paging George Kaplan. So when Roger raises his hand to call the employee over, Van Damm's thugs mistake that for Roger answering the page. It's something that if you really are not watching closely, you may miss.

The final seconds of the movie with the train entering the tunnel was Hitchcock's wink about the newlyweds enjoying their honeymoon. It was a way to be suggestive that could get by the censors.
