For more pure fun, “North by Northwest” (1959) includes the standard Hitchcock tropes, with handsome stars, great costuming, witty dialogue, plenty of suspense, iconic set pieces, a powerful finale and iconic music by Bernard Herrmann.

The hardest thing to believe about this movie is that any man would reject Grace Kelly.

Grace Kelly was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. Hearts broke all over the world when she became Princess Grace of Monaco. Even more when she died.

The apartment-courtyard set for “Rear Window” was constructed at Stage 18 on the Paramount lot. At the time, it was the largest indoor set ever built at Paramount. It measured ninety-eight feet wide, one hundred eighty-five feet long, and forty feet high, and consisted of thirty-one apartments, eight of which were completely furnished and provided with electricity and running water. The courtyard was set below stage level; the soundstage floor was removed so the courtyard could be built in what had previously been a basement storage space.

Another great Hitchcock film is "Dial M for Murder". "Dial M for Murder" and "Rope" are both single room mysteries.

The nurse is Thelma Rittner, who was a brilliant character actress, including in All About Eve. Her first role (uncredited) was in the original Miracle on 34th St., where she plays a harried xmas shopper thanking the manager for Macy's new policy. Her down-to-earth pronouncements in her Brooklynese accent was her trademark.

The villain was played by Raymond Burr. I remember him as the only English-speaking character in the original Godzilla. His most famous role was the long-running series Perry Mason, although he also played a wheelchair bound detective in Ironsides.

In Rear Window, Hitchcock had him put on some weight (although he suffered from being overweight his entire life), to gray his hair, so he looked like Hitchcock's (at the time) nemesis producer David O. Selznick. (Bring up a picture of him and you can see how close the looks.) Selznick had worked with Hitchcock on Rebecca, the only Hitchcock film won an Oscar best picture. Selznick also produced the blockbuster 1939 Gone With The Wind.

8:14 The reason for establishing the heat in the first couple of minutes is to explain why everyone's apartment is open to the world (before air-conditioning was as common as today).

SHADOW OF A DOUBT, 1943. Hitchcock's personal favorite of all his films.

This is the movie that learned me a new name for "perfection" - Grace Kelly.
