  Encountering the first game back in the early 2000s was a total mind expanding moment for me. "Games can be like this?" It wasn't like any action or rpg experience I had run into yet. They all tell such small, personal feeling narratives.

  Honestly it's a shame more games don't use WOTS' "short game but you replay it 1000 times" model. It gives you more freedom to do things without worrying about ruining an 80-hour experience. Also one of my favorite details about the game is that when a faction likes you, its members call out to you when you run by. That's another thing other RPGs could easily do, they just don't. It really makes you feel like you're part of a community.

  I developed my own form of martial arts in this game and have been training to master it ever since. I actually became a hapkido and taekwondo instructor in real life and still teach till this day! me and my best friend still bring this game up weekly, I'm from the heart of Chicago and I have literally never lost a fight. And I think it's because of this game😁

  I absolutely loved this game back in the day, and really appreciated your thoughtful review and look back at it. It's such a shame that the fifth one was cancelled and we haven't gotten another. Here's hoping that there's some spiritual sequels that turn up one day.

  One of the aspects of the I've always enjoyed is the central conceit of showing the three main paths available to ronin and largely any sort of soldier who no longer has a clear mission. You can either seek a lord to serve, turn to banditry (more or less), or try to start a new life away from warfare while surrounded by people who may not entirely trust you. Aside from that I remember being impressed by the different reactions you could get, especially in cut scenes. In particular a specific interaction where drawing my sword had a vastly different outcome than I had anticipated. Also if I recall correctly this game my first encounter with something resembling the Kuchisake-Onna spirit.
