"Oh I love socializing! But on what terms?" THIS! YES! I enjoy socializing, but only under very specific conditions!

I feel imposter syndrome while filling out the "always, sometimes, never" questionaires or tests. The "always" box is something that should never be checked because nothing is always. Those tests just make me second guess myself and then my answers end up feeling like lies.

As a late diagnosed high masking woman, i have been invalidaded in so many ways, both before and after my diagnosis. It is incredibly aggravating to be told I'm weird, to be bullied, to be ostracized, to alienate others, yet they don’t believe the diagnosis. At least I am kinder to myself now.

The one thing I have always been told by others, "You're different". Can they tell what is different about me? No, no they cannot.

As someone who isn't diagnosed, but who has suspected autism- The insidious thing about high masking is that sometimes I don't even understand the question. It's presented in a context I've never even considered, because I was taught, from the beginning of my life, to completely ignore, repress or sublimate everything that other people find a problem. Like 'needing' or 'wanting' to stim. That's literally a baffling statement to me, but holy @#$& the relief I feel when I let myself rock and hum, open and close my hands and stare at lights is unbelievable.

When I tell people that I think I may be on the spectrum, they say, <i>"We're all on the spectrum a little bit."</i> It's a bit invalidating. Not that I <i><b>want</b></i><b></b> to be autistic, mind you. I just want answers, and the more I watch your videos and look back on my memories, the more things start to make sense. But then I have to ask myself: <i>"Am I looking at my memories through an ASD only filter?"</i> 🤔

I think the reason I struggle with imposter syndrome is that I’ve been so high-masking for so long that I know I CAN do some of those things. I know I can suppress my stims for long periods, fit into a social group if I’m camouflaging well, I can transition quickly etc etc. What I’m trying to validate now is that doing those things hurts me, and I am allowed to stop. Now that I can clearly see the harm I’m doing to myself, I am working to unmask enough to protect myself from another burnout.

Visual form of the questions mentioned:<br><br>1) Do you have successful social interactions the majority of the time? <br>2) Have you easily fit in (do people feel comfortable about you/think you are normal)?<br>3) Do you love being around people in a variety of environments? <br>4) Does your speech come out at a natural volume, pace, and tone? <br>5) Do you go through your day without the urge for repetitive movements?<br>6) Do you have very few or no negative responses to sensory stimuli?<br>7) Do you not have particular topics/interests that you can lose yourself in for hours at a time?<br>8) Are you naturally good at 'going with the flow'?<br>9) Do transitions between activities come easily to you with no need to take time to mentally load your next steps?<br>10) Are you good at naturally being yourself all the time with no feeling of needing to change or adjust for the people/environment around you?<br><br>If you answered 'yes' to most or all of these questions, you may not be autistic

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsYGhE4f06A&t=177">2:57</a> I had a psychiatrist tell me that he thought I shouldn't go and get evaluated for Autism and ADHD because he thought it would "make it more difficult for me to live a normal life". I'm neurodivergent and hide it well, but I'm never going to live a "normal" (neurotypical) life. It kept me from getting the support, care, and employment protections I needed. Always get a second opinion from a specialist, not the guy that makes money writing you prescriptions.

I feel like a fraud because I’m consuming all of this content and relating to it - but have never been diagnosed. I have mentioned it to my therapist multiple times, but he has ignored it. I’m not sure if he’s using a tactic of focusing on behavior and not saying yes or no about my self-diagnosis. I suppose I should ask him outright for a test.
