“You dont need to be exceptional, you need to be above average. The good news is most of you are pulling the average way down” 😂😂😂 I died.

We should all ask ourselves the question "would I pay for this game?" and answer it honestly.

I learned a very important lesson: what you already know how to do takes 3 times the time you think, what you don't know takes 10 times the time. Make a simple well polished game. Whatever you have in mind Is way more complex to achieve than you could ever expect.

Over the course of the development of my "1 month long project" yaal got from "shove out as many small games as possible" to "please for the love of god make quality games".

The reason the slop is getting worse is the general advice that you will find online is people telling new devs "just get something up" as it will be more valuable for them than anything else to learn what it takes to release, what does and doesn't work etc... I'm not surprised, honestly most of them just have to start somewhere...

With all the new tools, more people feel they have a chance, and the world economy tanking is a great opportunity for people to finally follow that career they always dreamed but never pursued

I love this because in the creative field, we’ve gotten away from the term “indie” being a professional without a large backing to mean any individual who does a thing mostly by themselves. We used to have “home brewers” in the games space and “garage band” in the music space.

A dude in his basement making $100 off a half baked game idea is not the same as an individual with a sustainable business or investment backing.

Somehow we know to not call a handy man for the job of a contractor but creatives think a passion with no fruit is a career.

I feel like "don't release slop" shouldn't be a controversial statement. Is it? Really?

Marnix woke up & chose violence 😂 The worst indie game myth is that your first game will be your best & only success. [Spoiler: It won't.] That's why ppl rush it, and fail to self-assess honestly. Devs need to get comfortable critiquing each others' work, including artists & biz-dev opinions - Next Fest (or launch!) should not be the first time ppl give feedback.

Also, it should be good news that devs don't need millions of dollars, secret connections, or a huge social following to find an audience. PC games are still pretty accessible in that respect. And console dev is the most egalitarian it's ever been. But it still takes skills, time, experience, and some money, and I think ppl don't want to accept that.

The game shouldn't forget it is a game. Not a commercial product (for a mark or an influencer), not a machinima tool.
7:02 That what a Demo should be! A Demonstration of the full game!
