It's hard to not immediately refer to Chris Zukowsky when discussing this topic to the point where I feel like it's almost impossible to even add anything new to the discussion. The guy has put too much insane content out recently and it should be a must watch for every indie and their mom.

Okay time to confess my biggest mistakes:
1. Going into steam next fest waaay too early
2. Almost no play testing
3. Bad capsule
4. Low selling genre

15:16 Those dedicated communities go CRAZY, don't underestimate how useful they can be! I had an incremental game I made during a jam get added to incrementaldb and it ended up accounting for over 4,000 views + 3,000 plays if proportional to traffic from itch itself, though I suspect more. Rating is 36-35 on there, if you want to know what ballpark stats those votes suggest. Now I'm curious how it'd go for a full game instead of one thrown together in 9 days. Definitely worth immersing yourself in communities around your game's genre if they exist.

I actually got to 32,500 wishlists with the first game I ever worked on (for almost 4 years when launched into EA). I guess it had a great hook. However, it wasn't all that fun, and conversion rate was, unfortunately, quite low. Hopefully I can get there again with my second (I've been working on it for about 15 months and will get the Capsule Art professionally done - $500 - next month, then launch the Steam Page), but have a game that more fun to play this time.

Just worked for a startup that couldn't find a capsule artist for under $1,000. Some were charging $3,000 (I think they might have been up charging since this startup presented themselves as an established company? Also maybe people up charge us for being on the United States West Coast)

Honestly I may consider creating a game one day if I have a really good idea. The chances are small, I don't see many games with good ideas. Usually I'm more interested in the story of the developers than in the games they make.
