20 Forgotten M1 Garand Variants the Army Buried

The Garand could have gone to war with TEN rounds — not eight. And that rifle actually existed. 👉 @bringbackarsenal Subscribe now — most of these 20 rifles never made it into a single history book you own. What they told you: the M1 Garand was a finished, perfect design from day one. The truth: the rifle you know is the SURVIVOR of a twenty-year war fought inside the U.S. Army — against MacArthur, against Springfield, against the clock, and against the rain. The antagonist here isn't Germany or Japan. It's institutional inertia, ammunition stockpiles, and the accountants who killed better rifles for the sake of what was already sitting in a warehouse. This video is built entirely on Springfield Armory records, museum documentation, and the CMP archive — no myths, no forum legends, no "tanker" marketing tales. THIS IS THE FULL FAMILY TREE OF THE M1 GARAND — 20 BRANCHES, FROM THE .276 PEDERSEN ANCESTOR TO THE T20E2 THAT ALMOST REPLACED IT IN 1945. Right now, "Garand" is trending again as WWII centennials, CMP surplus sales, and the return of classic-rifle collecting push these forgotten prototypes back into the spotlight — AND MOST VIEWERS ARE STILL REPEATING THE SAME OLD EIGHT-ROUND STORY. Before that changes, watch this. We rank all 20 variants using three pillars: what the ARMY tested, what the SOLDIER carried, and what the ENGINEERING left behind in the M14. This is the definitive countdown — nothing like it exists on YouTube in this depth. ▶ The #1 secret Springfield didn't want in the archives: a 10-round Garand approved in 1932 ▶ Why everything you heard about the "Tanker Garand" is commercial marketing, not history ▶ How the M1 became the M14 — without anyone announcing it ▶ The truth about the gas-trap M1 that blew apart on the test range ▶ The paratrooper folding-stock M1E5 nobody talks about ▶ Why John Garand himself designed the rifle that would replace his own CHAPTERS 00:00 — The rifle that could have carried 10 rounds 00:50 — #20 The .276 Pedersen Ten-Shot Garand 02:09 — #19 The Gas-Trap M1 04:26 — #17 The Folding-Stock M1E5 05:38 — #16 The T26 Short Rifle ("Tanker" myth debunked) 06:55 — #15 The M1D Sniper 10:17 — #11 The Sanford Side-Loading T35 13:07 — #9 The Navy Mark 2 Mod 0 17:45 — #5 Winchester's Magazine-Fed Garand 18:59 — #4 Remington's T22 Family 21:17 — #2 John Garand's T20 22:17 — #1 The T20E2 — 100,000 rifles ordered, zero delivered 23:56 — Why the M14 is really a Garand REFERENCES ▪ Springfield Armory National Historic Site archives — trial records for T3E2, T20, T26 ▪ Cody Firearms Museum — Winchester experimental M1 collection ▪ Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) documentation — Navy Mk2 Mod 0/Mod 1 conversions DISCLAIMER: This channel is dedicated to firearms history, engineering, and preservation.
