I live in New Orleans and nobody forgets the Italians in this City...we even have the festival... Some of the very best restaurants are Italian...

My family came from Cefalu through New Orleans. They settled in Crowley and my great grandfather was a shoemaker.

And to clarify I am a Schiro, It is pronounced Skiro. We are from Epirus, run out by the Turks and Ottomans, given shelter by the Contessa Entellina, hence the name.

My great grandmother docked in the port of New Orleans when she came to America. My great grandfather was already here in San Francisco. She stayed with relatives until she was well after becoming sick on the ship. She later went by train to San Francisco with her two babies! Can you imagine? One barely a year old and a newborn! New Orleans had a lot of Sicilians and Italians but it wasn't safe. One of the largest mass hangings of Sicilians had occurred there in the late 1800's.

Progresso Foods started in Vineland, NJ. My Grandfather and Mr. Taormina were best of friends. I remember, as a boy (I'm 87 now), Mr. Taormina visiting our farm in Newfield and bringing a bushel of canned products. I seem to remember the factory on Chestnut Ave. in Vineland.
