Hello everyone and thank you for watching! I really hope you found this video useful. I read as many of your comments as possible and try to reply to as many as I can every day across the channel. The community on this channel is absolutely fantastic.... people sharing their stories, supporting each other, and learning together. It's amazing to see.

It means a lot to me that this has become a space where people are interested in the simple things that keep us healthy and prevent problems before they ever reach the hospital. If there’s a topic you’d like me to explain in a future video, please let me know in the comments.

If you’d like to support me, the best thing you can do is click the like button and subscribe. It really helps these videos reach more people who might benefit from them, and it allows me to keep making them!

My goal with these videos is simple: to help as many people as possible stay healthier and avoid ending up in the emergency department if we can.

And just in case there's any doubt... any AI-generated videos of me are completely fake and not affiliated with me in any way. I’m actively reporting these channels, and I’d encourage you to do the same if you see them.

Dr Alex 😊

My mom always used to say “It’s not what you eat once in a while that counts, it’s what you eat on a regular basis that makes the difference.” She was right then, and she’s right now.

Five cancer causing or cancer promoting food categories:
1. Processed meats, e.g. salami, sausages, and chorizo.
2. Over charred foods, including some typical BBQ foods.
3. Ultra processed foods and TV dinners.
4. Sugar laced foods and highly processed starchy foods.
5. Solvent extracted seed oils and industrially processed oils, especially those used in commercial deep fried fast food.

As a fellow physician, just wanted to say thank you for providing great evidenced based medical content. I recently discovered your channel, and I have appreciated learning and reading up on the most current evidenced based research and references available regarding the topics you have discussed. Keep up the good work, so that others may continue to learn, and perhaps make better lifestyle changes too.

I don't often make comments but I'm making an exception! I made the mistake of searching for menopausal health videos a year of so ago and have subsequently been overwhelmed with pertient and not so pertinent content ever since, including, thankfully, a Dr Alex video! 🙃I've watched many of your videos over the last few months and I have to say that your delivery, genuineness and science-based arguements are so superior to other channels on equivalent subjects. You are so genuine and really seem to care. Your have gained almost unprecidented numbers of subscibers over a short time-frame for this type of content and rightly so. I really really hope you hold dear to your promise of no adverissing, Dr Alex supplelent lines etc 🙂cos that makes us really belive in what you say rather than all the other big health channels that are all about profitizing from their product sales - please dont go there - I hope that if you get enough subscibers you'll be able to make an equivalent A&E doctor living wage (or rock star!) 😄 Thanks for all you do. Really appreciated x

    What to Avoid

Processed meats — pepperoni, salami, deli ham, bacon, sausages, and anything preserved, cured, salted, or smoked to extend shelf life. These contain nitrites that convert in the gut to DNA-damaging compounds, and heme iron that irritates the bowel lining.
Regularly charred or burnt food — heavily blackened barbecue meat, burnt toast, or anything aggressively seared at very high heat. Occasional barbecues are fine, but don’t make a habit of eating blackened crusts or smoke-coated food.
Liquid sugar — fizzy drinks, sweetened coffees, energy drinks, fruit juice, and smoothies. Without fiber to slow absorption, these spike blood sugar and insulin, driving insulin resistance, visceral fat, and chronic inflammation over time.
Deep-fried fast food — the danger is not seed oils in a bottle, but oil heated to extreme temperatures and reused all day in commercial fryers. This creates harmful oxidation byproducts. Combined with refined carbs and excess calories, it promotes obesity and inflammation.
Ultra-processed foods in general — anything heavily industrially manufactured with ingredients you wouldn’t find in a home kitchen (emulsifiers, artificial flavorings, chemical additives). These spike blood sugar, promote low-grade inflammation, and disrupt the gut microbiome.

What to Do Instead

Eat whole foods — choose food your great-grandmother would recognize as food. If it looks like it came from a plant or an animal in more or less its original form, it’s a better choice.
Cook at home — a small amount of oil in your own pan for a single meal is chemically very different from commercial fryer oil that has been abused all day.
Keep treats occasional, not habitual — one barbecue or one pint with friends won’t hurt you; what shapes health is what you do consistently over years and decades.
Learn gradually — watch videos, buy cookbooks, read about whole-food eating. You don’t need to change everything overnight. The more you learn, the easier it becomes to shift your habits naturally.
Take personal responsibility — don’t wait for policy or industry to fix the food environment. You can step around ultra-processed food yourself, starting with the choices you make today.

Useful (I hope) tip. Use a meat thermometer when bbqing food. You'll find you can remove it long before it gets charred and it'll still be tender and juicy instead of chewy, dry and blackened.

The amount of food in the grocery store that actually isn't food is staggering. So much junk that if they removed the highly processed junk I think my super store could be condensed to two aisles.
