Walruses Are Terrifying... Here's Why

  My grandfather when he was a young man around late 1940s and early 1950s witnessed a pod of orcas hunting a lone large male walrus in Lyon Inlet Nunavut, they were ramming the walrus and the walrus was trying to fight back, it was getting injured and the large male orca tried to ram the walrus and the walrus managed to sink its huge tusks deep in the side or the orca, the walrus couldn’t or wouldn’t get loose from the orca and they went under the sea and both never resurfaced, my grandfather thought they both must of died. That’s the only story I know of with orcas going after a walrus, I’ve never heard of any other walrus being caught by orcas, they seem to give them space. Polar bears do attack them only when they are on ice or land and it’s usually smaller or young walrus they go after, not the big ones. There are cases of walrus’s turning into predators and catching seals, their tusks turn yellow from  the seal fat and their eyes turn red and have a darker skin colour. It’s plausible a walrus can inflict dangerous wounds or even kill a orca.

  You never appreciate the sheer SIZE of a walrus until you see one up-close. A really big one is the size of a pickup truck, but chunkier. They don't look too massive in videos, because they are against a backdrop of ice or sand or water that doesn't really give you an idea of proper scale. Then you realize the polar bear attacking them looks kind of small next to them, and that adult polar bear is 9 or 10 feet tall standing on it's hind legs... The first time I saw one up close at a zoo I was shocked by just how MASSIVE a 2.5 ton animal really is. And if you want to feel even smaller, go see a full grown bull elephant seal in the flesh up close. And by close I mean on the other side of foot-thick reinforced glass in a controlled setting, because you REALLY don't want to get that close to one in the wild!

  Wow!!! Much respect for the walrus!!! I'm 70yrs old, and it just goes to show that you are never too old something new every day. You just need to want to learn!!

  You’re lucky I learned a lot from this video, so I gave it a thumbs up. “The Orca Killer?” Thumbnail is very ridiculous clickbait tho, was the word Orca even muttered in the video? Just be better, and straight up with people. Wild stuff tho

  The only way Walruses could kill orcas is if an Orca ate too many of them and died of indigestion.

  That was an exceptionally well done video on the nature of walruses. Surprising, creepy (brain suckers for Pete's sake!) , but honestly, that's Nature's way of ensuring survival.
