  EVERYONE needs to see this, not for the lesson on what happened at Chernobyl - but what happens when we allow politicians to lie to cover up their mistakes!<br> &nbsp; &nbsp;&quot;What is the cost of lies?   It’s a somber, but important watch. It’s deeply heartbreaking the amount of people that were devastated by this event, and I have nothing but respect to the poor souls who prevented Chernobyl from escalating into a greater disaster than it already was, at the cost of their lives.

  Stressful watch, important watch. This show is a phenomenal demonstration of <b>Vranyo,</b> a term from the Soviet (now Russian) culture of paranoia and systemic lying, deflecting responsibility, and bending the truth through layers of bureaucracy. &quot;Vranyo&quot; is a type of lie where the speaker and listener both know the information is false, yet they proceed as if it were true. Mostly, because one or both are afraid to contradict a 3rd party. Vranyo is often used to project strength, avoid responsibility, or maintain a facade of competence.<br><br>Without spoilers, Chernobyl shows how so many &nbsp;competent people went along with hideous lies, because they believed contradicting the State was futile, and would result in ostracization or punishment. &nbsp;&quot;What is the cost of lies?&quot;

  Fun Fact: the musical score is so unnerving bc it was created using recordings from an actual nuclear power plant. <br>I am beyond excited to go on this journey with you J. This is one of my favorite series, its tough but brilliant imo.

  Something that isnt widely understood in the west is why the men in the control room listened to Akimov when he was so blatantly wrong. He was in a position of power. He was appointed by the state. Being fired for insubordination by a representative of the state in the Soviet Union was the equivilent of social suicide. You would never work again. Nor would you recieve any welfare, handouts, support or sympathy. There were no homeless shelters that would take you. You were a social parasite at that point. A disease. Something to be removed. You and your family were doomed. Literally. A lot of people who ran desperately across minefields under AK47 fire to get into West Germany were trying to escape such a fate.
