  Scherbina's question about seeing graphite on the roof was brilliant. He doesn't really know anything about reactors, but he knows bullshit, so he goes fishing, and gauges their reaction. That's how he realizes Legasov is on to something, and the plant management are only covering their asses.

  Hi, I’m probably one of the few viewers of your channel who actually lived in the Soviet Union during that period, so I wanted to share my perspective. The way this series portrayed life in the late Soviet Union, especially the mid-to-late 1980s, was honestly outstanding. Western movies and TV usually depict the USSR in a very cartoonish and unrealistic way, which tends to look almost laughable to people from ex-USSR countries. But this show got an incredible number of details right.<br><br>The costumes, the buildings, the apartments, the furniture, the paper, the pencils, the hairstyles, the atmosphere, basically every tiny detail felt authentic. You could tell the creators really did their homework.<br><br>The only major inconsistency for me was the scene where the coal minister personally went with a military convoy to recruit the miners. In the real USSR, something like that would never happen. A minister would simply pick up the phone, call the local authorities, and order them to provide the workers. That would be enough. The system worked exactly like that. So that scene honestly broke the immersion for me.<br><br>There are also a few smaller inaccuracies. For example, the show overuses the word “comrade.” By the 1980s, it was already much less common in everyday speech than Western media tends to think. It was still used in formal situations, speeches, or official settings, but in casual conversations between coworkers or ordinary people, it sounded overly formal. By that time, “citizen” or simply addressing people normally was much more common.<br><br>Still, these are relatively minor issues. Overall, this is one of the most accurate depictions of everyday life in the late Soviet Union I’ve ever seen in Western media.

  I remember being 16 in Sweden and the morning news told us a nuclear power plant had detected radiation from the Soviet Union. For months kids were told to stay indoors when there was rain or the wind was from the &quot;wrong&quot; direction. It killed the business for the indigenous Sami people because their Reindeer had too much radiation so the meat was inedible for years and the same was true for mushrooms. Some areas were only declared safe for picking mushrooms recently.

  The helicopter didn&apos;t go down because of the radiation, if you watch it again you will see the blades break off. They hit one of the cables from the crane. I actually saw real footage of it happening. It not being explained in the show I believe was for dramatic effect.

  Pikalov was able to drive the high range dosimeter close into the plant because his massive lead balls absorbed the radiation for him. <br><br>While the above is a joke, read up on the biography of his life, he was a much bigger badass than they could show in the series. That&apos;s also why him getting the reading was important, no one would question his word and coming from him it could not be denied

  Iodine pills allow your thyroid to absorb the non-radioactive iodine in the pill first, vs absorbing any radioactive iodine if you inhale or ingest any. Your thyroid absorbs iodine to make hormones.
