Additional note: The pilot plant is a scaled down version (1-2 gallons per minute vs 4,000 gpm per filter) of the entire treatment process that is used to evaluate various treatment chemicals, and different types of filter media. It is a critical part of the design process for any modifications that are proposed at the treatment plant.

Did you get lost anywhere? Let me know if you’d like a shorter version!

I can't believe how quickly that hour flew by. Sign me up for a longer version if you ever contemplate such a thing. Dave displays a remarkable level of intelligence, expertise and genuine wisdom that make this a wonderful and inspiring video to watch. 😊

Dave Rowley is a very, very intelligent man. I built test equipment for different Healthcare companies and having automatic test equipment is fantastic
until it stops working correctly, then people Must know exactly how it works and have a way to manually control it! So training people to do it manually
and doing it regularly is very important! I would say they should give Dave a raise and hope to heavens he doesn't retire early! The whole city of Rochester
is very lucky to have all these smart employees! Thanks Ally for this great tour!

I love stuff like this. So interesting to see the inner workings of what 99% of us take entirely for granted. Thanks for the tour!

Fantastic video, thanks to you, Dave, and the Rochester officials. The Rochester government deserves real credit for providing the money to keep the plant in what appears to be tip top shape. Too many places would have zeroed out their capital improvements budget so the parks could be mowed more frequently.

I was very surprised that their water didn't come from Lake Ontario. I grew up in Cleveland and have lived in Toledo for over 40 years now, I have drunk a lot of water from Lake Erie. I assume it is because we are very flat so no altitude difference to take the place of pumping or any big lakes other than Erie. Toledo has been in major catch up mode for deferred maintenance since we made nation news for unsafe water from excessive blue-green algae. I understand that our water plant had leaking roofs, leaking pipes and rust everywhere. We have gone through a series of significant water rate increases and hopefully are getting the badly needed repairs and upgrades.

Impressed with how overbuilt, and the redundancy there is.

I cleaned out that aluminum chlorohydrate tank last month. Hemlock is a super cool place and I love doing work there!

The Rochester NY water system also draws water from nearby Canadice Lake (1,096 feet above sea level) which is higher elevation than Hemlock (905'). For most of its history - over 100 years - the pristine lake water was not filtered at all. The filtration plant was opened in 1993. The City of Rochester finished building the 28-mile system of conduits, tunnels, and pipelines into the city's local distribution reservoirs - Rush, Cobbs Hill, and Highland Park reservoirs - in 1876. Before the filtration plant, the water came to the city exclusively by gravity flow. All builings, cottages etc. around the lakes have been removed over the decades and no power boats are allowed!
Interestingly, Monroe County that includes Rochester gets its water from Lake Ontario!
