  There is an Antonov sized hole in Europe&apos;s capacity to build a strategic airlift aircraft

  One reason not discussed here on why people haven&apos;t really looked much at (large) strategic airlifters is that many (most?) militaries have little or no expeditionary taskings and so no real need for longrange air transport. Tactical or tactical-ranged airlifters, such as the C-130, C-390 and A-400, are generally sufficient for non-expeditionary militaries. As an example, in europe only France and the UK have much in the way of expeditionary requirements.

  The BEST idea is for Airbus and RR to team up, and use the RR Trent 700 series engines to make a family of 2 Airlifters, a 2 engine One and a 4 engined one...to replace the C17 and the C5A together. BUT, UK-Germany-France and others should mobulize.

  The Antonov Design Bureau in Kyiv, Ukraine designed the An-124 and An 255 Mriya; aircraft which rival the C-5 Galaxy. &nbsp;This design history goes back to 1971 so they have the depth of experience needed to produce aircraft of this specialized purpose. &nbsp;As a European nation, they could establish collaboration with Airbus and provide the design expertise &nbsp;to revise the An-124 into the 21st century, with the rest of Europe furnishing components or better yet they could partner with Antonov in building production facilities in western Ukraine to assemble finished aircraft for Ukraine to sell and then earn currency to repay the investment in manufacturing

  The most major problem right now, is once anyone spends all the money necessary to get back up to the equivalent of WW2 production of war materials, and logistics, who&apos;s to say there will still be a need for them? While the world is going to hell in a hand basket NOW, will it still be that way in a year? 5 years, 10 years? Too many nations are used to vapor ware, and political rattling of the sabers. China may NEVER make a move on Tiawan for example. While they can build and build and build, they don&apos;t have combat experiece. As the old saying goes, everyone has a plan, until the first punch is thrown.
