Freddie had been a long-time fan of opera, especially Montserrat Caballé. In 1986, he mentioned on Spanish television that he would like to meet her, and they met for the first time in Barcelona in February 1987. Later, when the city had been chosen for the 1992 Summer Olympics, Caballé, a native of the city, was asked to help produce a song for the games. She asked Mercury to collaborate. Caballé became enthusiastic about the project and instead of recording a single, she proposed to make an album, on which Mercury agreed. "Barcelona", their proposed opening song, had to be completed by 1988 in time to be entered as a candidate for the 1992 Olympic theme.(song was the anthem for the 1992 Olympics but could not be performed live by Mercury due to his illness and death before the Games. Instead, a recording was shown during a travelogue at the opening ceremony.) The album is called Barcelona

"God willing we will meet again!" She was one of the very few people who knew Freddie was dying. That line hits so damn hard knowing that.

Montserrat, or Montsy as she was called, was an opera diva from Spain. One of the top sopranos in the world. He loved her.

She asked what a rock star wouldwant from her but when they started taking music she was blown away by his knowledge of music form and structure. They became great friends so much she was one of the few that knew Freddie was dying of AIDS

If there really is something after we die, I hope that Freddie and Montserrat have met up and are spending all their time just singing together. They were such great friends. Still so sad Freddie didn't live long enough to perform this at the Olympics - it would have raised the roof.

Montserrat Caballé is undoubtedly one of the greatest sopranos in the history of opera. Born in Barcelona, she was universally admired for her unparalleled bel canto technique, her almost supernatural breath control, and her delicate pianissimos.

One of the last live performances from from Freddie Mercury written by him for the 1992 Olympics he knew he would not be here to perform on the day so it was recorded live a few years before.
