It’s ironic that MTV were offended by this because Queen were in drag and yet they were ok with hair bands like Poison and Whitesnake, who wore more makeup, lipstick and hairspray than the entire Dallas Cowboy cheerleading squad.

The song is writen by John Deacon, and the video was Roger’s girlfriend idea, the whole song had nothing to do with Freddie, he was not the only songwriter and creative mind on Queen, the band had 4 members

The drag was a tribute to "Coronation Street", a very popular soap opera. America was too conservative in 1984 to accept it, but this is so tame compared to what was to come both musically and visually.

It was meant to be a piss take on Coronation Street, a British soap opera, it was said at the time that American youths shouldn't be subjected to "cross dressers" we British have a sense of humour that isn't always understood in the USA

MTV banned it because the band dressed in drag ( which was normal humour in Britain). You nailed it when you said the band stood for people that were not accepted in society. I think Queen ended up saving many teenagers lives as they finally had somebody who spoke for them.

One Freddie Mercury had the most outsanding voice ever. The band is the most incredible in history. This man had the voice of all time. Xx

In the 80s, we had a very open mindset. At least in Europe.<br>In addition to Freddie Mercury, I can mention Boy George from Culture Club, Prince, David Bowie, Tino Casal in Spain... There were artists who played with ambiguity, transformism, or simply extreme sensuality, and no one censored them.
