My wife's uncle was R.V. Burgin who fought and survived Pelileu. He was also a character focused on in the series "The Pacific". He sadly passed a couple of years ago, and had a burial with full military honors in Lancaster, TX.

I gave my son your father's book before he enlisted in the Marines less than a year ago. I hope my own son never goes through what your father did -- but I wanted my son to know the legacy he was to be inheriting, taking up, and carrying forward.

The amazing thing about Pacific Island battles is how small an area was being fought over so intensely.

Favorite Eugene Sledge quote concerning his approach to the landing beach. He knew where his place should have been, at home next to Mother. He was a good man. Rip Mr. Sledgehammer.

As I worked as a cardiac surgeon years ago I met a man in the ICU with unstable angina, who I would operate on in the next day or so. I spoke with him and when I found out he was a vet asked to generate some conversation , as I usually did with vets, what branch, what theater, what campaigns. He eventually said he had been on Peleliu. I responded (as a WW2 history buff) that it was a very difficult battle but was a victory. He looked perplexed and said with a surprised look and the innocence of a working man that he didn’t think anyone knew about that battle. Given what I had learned about that battle, his response was humbling. The greatest generation.

The first picture of the guys under the amtrack was sent to me by a man named Jim Anderson several years ago. The man laying down in the front is my Grandfather who was referred to By EB Sledge as Cigar Chewing Joe Lambert. Mr Sledge was there with my grandpa on Okinawa when he was killed. The kind words he said about him in his book have stuck in my heart for years. The man over his shoulder is Harold Music. And Mr Anderson is peeping out over his legs. Even in his eighties Mr Anderson remembered this moment well. I spoke with many of the company K guys and they all were very helpful in telling me about my grandfather. Just wish I could have spoken to Mr. Sledge but I started my research about two years to late.

To me, the scene of the amtacs departing the LST in the “Pacific” is one of the greatest military movie scenes ever filmed.

My grandfather was KIA in France, I go to his Grave in a Memorial Cemetery in Georgia every Memorial Day and I am grateful he was not left in France.
