  Most days I listen to Jocko. Today I chose this podcast. Sledgehammer. Little did I know the man behind the nickname was the college professor I had at University of Montevallo back in 1980. Dr Sledge. The man who taught me about zoology. The man who talked about his love of birds. The man who spoke softly with an inflection that I admired. I could have never explained it then, even as an 18 year old college freshman, but I just knew there was something special about him. I have thought about him so many times in my life and wondered. I didn’t know him long but he made an impression on me. Today I am proud to learn that he made an impression on so many others, and continues to do so. Thank you Sledgehammer, and thank you Jocko for helping me see just how special he truly was.

  I am genuinely disappointed that the movie "the pacific" is not 100 hours long.....

  My grandfather was a machine gunner in Sledge's sister regiment. He fought with the old breed - G 2-5  and came out with 2 purple hearts. He explained a story about trying to cross Death valley in Okinawa. He was immediately pinned by heavy machine gun fire and tried to take cover in a hole with a buddy of his. Mortars came down and one landed in front of him and was slowly moving towards him. He realized they were trying to hit his position. He tried to get up and move but was hit by a sniper and was still pinned by the machine gun fire. He went back in the hole and literally waited for the mortar to hit him. He rolled over as soon as the mortar hit and it hit him all over the side and back of the knee. A bazooka man tried to take out the machine gun position and unfortunately the bazooka man got blown up into a million pieces by either arty or mortars. The assistant bazooka man was probably dazed by the explosion and walked in front of the machine gun fire. My grandfather's squad lead had to run up to him and throw smoke to get them out finally. My grandfather used his k bar and dug our all the shrapnel and kept on fighting to the end.

  My God, the BALLS that those guys had was incredible!!! My dad was in the Army in Europe and he described what bullets sound like when they pass by and what the German 88's sounded like going overhead.... The Greatest Generation indeed!!! And the Marines went through worse!!!

  Love the humility Jocko expresses where he shares a short experiences then compares it to Sledge whereas Sledge&apos;s experiences is ramped up <br>No chest beating. Awesome.

  My dad was part of the landing on Tarawa as a corporal in the 2nd Marines. <br><br>He had nightmares after the war ended until the day he passed away at 82 years of age. <br><br>He told no one what the dreams were about. Not even my mother.

  If anyone is curious there is a channel called Reel History where a historian and Henry break down the Pacific episodes. It’s really cool. He taught at my local college the University of Montevallo. Just bought his book on audible to listen to at work.

  I read this book when I was a young teenager before I went into the Marine Corps trying to take in everything I could before I left. &nbsp;I read it again about 12 years ago. &nbsp;Just finished it again &nbsp;last week. &nbsp;It has provoked so much thought and emotion.
