Regarding the oil graph, German oil stocks increased in early 1944 not because Italy went away as a drain on Germany, but because that was when the German synthetic fuel production at last got into high gear. Early 1944 was when major hydrogenation plants (Leuna, Pölitz, Zeitz etc) were fully completed, optimized, and running at maximum industrial capacity. And then the Allies bombed them out of existence...

During Overlord Vice Admiral Friedrich Ruge (naval advisor to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel). Looking at the sheer scale of what the Allies were throwing at the beaches, he noted in his diaries that the Germans were preparing to fight the last war, but the Allies "were bringing the next one."
