An under used tool is a good serrated Bread knife for dividing over grown plants.❤

A common mistake I see in many gardens in California is planting plants with different water needs in the same area or irrigation zone so some are thriving while the other is suffering .

the “functional not just pretty” reminder was so needed. i’ve got a walkway that turns into a slip n slide every winter. Truco Services, Inc. would have opinions.

We allowed our plans to grow naturally, and there is now a beautiful nest with three eggs in it for the Cardinals

I would add try as much as possible to find local indigenous species. They're under threat and yet they provide food and shelter for the local wildlife and insects.

I'm a hobbyist gardener and landscaper at all the homes I've owned over the years (70 yo). It's been very enjoyable for me, more a lifestyle than a hobby. Yeah, a sharpshooter is what I use for digging. Thanks for mentioning privet, lol, I use it a lot. In a rural area I used wintergreen which was growing everywhere anyway. I don't trim bushes much with a few exceptions (my wife complaining enough regarding a specific plant). I've planted uncountable trees and do trim the lower branches as the tree grows. Thanks for posting! 👍

Keeping plants in their natural form is so important, yet so many people ignore that and therefore increase the maintenance exponentially.

Love your content! I'd love an episode about caring for the tools (could be a series!) In particular, how to sharpen pruners, blades, etc. Hi Chip!

I have a fallen tree "living" in my yard that has become the trellis for my morning glory collection. Lucky enough to have a climate that allows the morning glories to be perennial, but allowing the plants to do what they want has turned a dead tree into the focal point of the yard. I like what you said about not beating the plants into submission. It also has become a favorite shelter for visiting birds ❤

My favorite and my go-to tool is the mattock! It’s an ancient tool and can make short work of even the hardest soil. My mom always used one and her mom too. They make women sized ones (3 lbs?) as well as heavier ones for men (5 lbs?). Wouldn’t give up my mattock for any other tool. However I admit I have a shed full of gardening tools. But this is my trusty side-arm! 😊❤

For years I have been using a putty/paint scraper of good quality as an edging tool instead of a gas or electric edger. It cuts a cleaner edge along sidewalks, walkways and flower/ vegetable beds. It’s great for loosening soil and transplanting. As I’ve gotten older bending is less comfortable and kneeling for long periods, even with a kneeling pad, is uncomfortable. I still can get off the ground easily from a sitting position, so I’ve found that using a fork or shovel can start a job, but the putty scraper and an inexpensive dollar store serrated steak knife are godsends for the everyday yard/garden upkeep.
