  i recently built a new house in Queensland Australia ...I had no idea what to plant so I drove around the neighbouring areas looking at what was growing well in other people's front yards and took some pics .. i then went to the local plant nursery and got advice from them what was good and what was not ... 3 years later I have best yard in the street ..60% garden and 40% lawn all growing well ... cheers from down under

  I put rocks in the bottoms of my house plant pots so my cats don't tip them over 😂

  30+ year arborist here…I’m glad to see you addressing tree topping.  Truly, it is NOT a way to control the size of a tree…new sprouts will form, weaker and more dangerous than the original form, and the cuts are a prime spot for decay to start.  If folks want a shorter tree in that spot, remove the “too large” tree and plant something more appropriate.  I’d just like to point out that drop-crotching on mature trees, while slightly better than inter-nodal cuts, is still a form of topping and generally results in the same poor outcomes.

  started a goldfish pond in a small above ground pool for a few reason.  I use the water from the fishpond to water my vegetable garden - has been over 5 years since buying fertilizer

  Loosely staking to prevent spindly transplants from topling over but which allows them to sway around in the wind has created sturdy plants for me for dozens of trees.

  I can’t tell you how many times I see the plans for a commercial building and then show up on site and they have shade plants in full sun or sun plants in full shade areas. It drives me up a wall, it’s very easy to find out where the sun is going to shine, but a lot of landscape architects just don’t seem to care on the commercial jobs I do. I love doing residential houses because I can account for it and I’ve learned some plants like morning shade or afternoon shade so it adds more nuance to planning and I personally love that.
