  Simone lived in the same apartment building as my family and I during her time in the Netherlands. She was very much on her own, but as I understood later, safely under the wings of her Dutch friend. I met her several times, not knowing exactly who she was. Only later, when I got more and more into Jazz myself while growing up, did I understand that I'd met one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time. Silly story, but 100% true. (I'm a huge Jazz head).

  She never sold her soul. The horrific racism she faced - oppression- denied her classical musical training- growing up in the racially segregated south- the death of MLK, Malcom etc ultimately affected her psyche, mental, spiritual and physical self. She was an American- if you know you know.....

  "I do not believe the conditions that produced a situation that demanded a song like that" is so very true. And people still mock Nina Simone and the choices she made in life while enjoying her music.

  One of the best and most cathartic music watches I've seen. I knew her life was hard, I knew things weren't great, but this really sank home that this beautiful artist was struggling through a world that at times hated her. This was a reminder of why Nina Simone has a home in my heart.

  Skip the narration.<br>I saw her in 1968 in Detroit, at a performance w Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. She blew the place down w a question to the audience: &quot;Do I move you? &quot;The roar of the crowd was so intense, I thought the building was going to fall down. What did I know? I was 15.
