The opening speaker was excellent too. He had a strong well supported description of the problem. We need this type of programming now. Critical thinking needs to be revived.

"The country who you pledged allegiance to did not pledge allegiance to you! " I got that.

“Until this moment, there is scarcely any hope for the American dream, because the people who are denied participation in it, by their very presence will wreck it; and if that happens it’s a very grave moment for the West.”

If any statement could sum up the 55+ years that followed up this speech it would be that.

The amount of relevance Baldwin’s speech holds in present day America is astounding

Listening to Buckley taught me so much about the current political jargon of saying nothing and adding nothing to an argument.

It is amazing how the well respected Buckley talks down to Baldwin rather than to reconize the great barriers to success as a result of the disadvantages imposed by the the politically empowered.

What struck me most about this was how when Baldwin stepped up to speak he seemed to be in the process of trying to collect his thoughts, a bit nervous even. But as soon as he starts to speak, everything just flows with such confidence, eloquence, and knowledge. The true essence of a writer indeed.

Baldwin made William F Buckley look foolish. James Baldwin was right when he stated poor people of all colors built the United States but they are not allowed to participate in the building and railroads they made, I’m paraphrasing. Mr. Baldwin won the crowd over and destroyed Buckley. I loved when the gentleman shouted out to let them vote in Mississippi. I had chills when the audience gave Mr. Baldwin a standing ovation.

My firs ttime ever hearing James Baldwin speak. My gosh he has such a command over the room. It feels like everyone is holding their breath just to hear the next word

Buckley saying Baldwin was faking a British accent when it was basically the same Trans-Atlantic accent Buckley spoke is insane. The audacity.
