And yes, Donnie made the decision to sacrifice himself in order to close the unstable tangent universe to prevent everything that followed.

He did have powers, even though he doesn't really realise until the end of the movie. Time travel, Telekinesis, Precognition (Seeing peoples paths /Limited knowledge of the future), Ability to conjure portals. Manipulation of both People and the elements (fire, water), and enhanced strength.

Everything is perfectly placed and links to everything else. Even the film they were watching at the cinema. Evil Dead.

During the period between him sleepwalking, which results in him avoiding getting hit by the jet engine, and him shooting Frank he figured out how to manipulate time, via guidance from the Frank rabbit. He keeps getting warned about the world ending by the rabbit. Turns out the world ending is his girlfriend getting killed and him murdering the guy who ran her over. After that happens he uses his newfound time knowledge to time travel back and prevent both things from happening, by being in bed when the jet engine lands.

My favourite bit of the entire movie is that they can't find the serial number on the engine or the plane it fell off.. because the plane was never there. Yet it has to be there. I call this phenomenon Shrödingers engine or, more accurately,.. Sparkle Motion.

In 2005, my older sister went to college. She came back with DVDs of Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, and American Astronaut - and my life was changed forever. I stayed up all night in her room watching these movies. Donnie Darko became, like, the Bible to me and my friends - constant philosophical and scientific and cinematic discussions.

Haven't seen this in a long, long time - though I listen to the music very often.

Basically, most of the movie happens in a "pocket universe", that was created by Donnie not dying from the engine at the beginning. This "pocket universe" is unstable and will collapse in the X amount of days, Frank tells Donnie. Now I'm not sure about this, but I always took it as: if the "pocket universe" collapses, it takes the "normal" universe with it, destroying everything; everyone dies.

In any case, that collapse needs to be prevented. The people know about that subconciously, so they unnowingly guide Donnie towards the solution: travel back in time and give your life to save everyone. The "living dead", like Frank (after he got shot, not before) know about it and take a more active role in guiding Donnie.

To travel through time, a large metal object is needed (like a DeLorean!). In this case, it's the engine of the plane that travels through time itself, taking Donnie with it at the end, closing the loop and preventing the "pocket universe" to be created in the first place.

Everyone lives (except for Donnie), great success!

In the end, I don't think the people really remember what happened (or didn't happen), but they get some sort of residue memories. Flashes from the "pocke universe" that was un-created. Similar to deja vu.

That's sort of like the rough explanation of what was happening. There is a lot of secondary and tertiary stuff about this movie floating around.

Also: you watched the directors cut. This is one of the rare cases, where the directors cut is worse than the theatrical cut. The DC tried to explain more, but ended up making it more confusing. Also the "dragging" that you felt is probably largely due to that. They also changed some of the soundtrack for the DC, which is also annoying, when you're used to the TC soundtrack.

The movie has been criticized for trying to appear smarter than it is. Pretentious. And aimed at edgelord "no future" kids. There is some truth to that. But it's still a fascinating experience, with an eerie atmosphere, that's one of a kind.

I think the mom waved to the strange girl at the end because she thought she looked nice, which would make sense because she liked her son in the other reality. Donnie also saved Frank, not just the girl, and he died alone but feeling positive at the same time. Maybe because he felt closer to God.
