  A simple explanation is a rift occurs with the dropping of the airplane engine, creating an alternate timeline that will cause the world to end,  Donnie eventual comes to terms that he must sacrifice himself to save the girl he loves and the world. The song is perfect for that sad ending where people only have a distant memory of Donnie from the alternate timeline like waking up from a dream. This mysterious quality makes the movie memorable.

The &quot;Director&apos;s Cut&quot; was a studio decision and the director&apos;s forced explanations destroy the ambiguity and wonderful mysteries of the original release. This is one of those films where it is best left to individual viewer&apos;s interpretations.

  This film is very close to my heart. I was 16 in 1990 when my then girlfriend was killed in a car accident. <br><br>This film cut me to the bone when I first saw it because of all the real life parallels and my own wish to exchange my life for that of my girlfriend&apos;s. <br><br>Initially I couldn&apos;t come to watch the film again but over time I gave it another go and it slowly became one of my favourite films. It still hurts to watch, but is also strangely cathartic.
