I started watching your channel solely for the Buffy content, because I need to be spoon-fed a steady diet of humans reacting to Buffy at all times. I have come to love your analysis and “reactions” across the board.

Donnie Darko has been my favorite movie for over 20 years; when I saw this reaction pop up on your channel I told my husband, “I will finally get to hear someone else analyze this movie the way that I have always wanted, and it won’t be someone my 17-year-old self harassed into watching it on my parents’ couch on a random Friday night.”

I know this reaction might not do your usual numbers, and I know that can be frustrating and disappointing, but thank you so, so much for this video. It was an amazing experience and a joy to hear your insights on this piece of art that is so dear to my heart.

Your focus on the religious themes helped me notice an interpretation I hadn’t seen before - Donnie as a Christ figure. The alternate timeline where he survives as “the last temptation”, then him choosing to die for our sins. The religious leaders not recognizing their Messiah.

There are a lot of ways to examine this film, partly because it’s not completely coherent. For me, the openness to interpretation is what makes it so enduringly fascinating!

When the teachers played by Drew Barrymore and Noah Wiley are talking and just say "Donnie Darko" "I know" it isn't supposed to be indicating an involvement with the Jim Cunningham stuff, I believe it's another of the many examples of people in this timeline noticing something "off" or inexplicable about Donnie because he's not supposed to be here anymore.

I think the young kid at the beginning talking about "popping one out" is a joke about her not being aware of what her sister meant by that rather than a serious intention to have kids as soon as she can - and the vibe is that the parents are more bothered about the decorum around the dinner table - not bringing up politics and talking in that slangy, flippant way - than in paying attention to what they are saying and what they might be worried about.

1:45 American Politics nerd here: Michael Dukakis was the Democratic Party's nominee for President in 1988. Dukakis's campaign was weak and he was constantly attacked for being too "liberal." He lost the election in a landslide (The most recent landslide election in American history) to George H. W. Bush, the republican candidate and Ronald Reagan's handpicked successor.

The two teachers chuckled about Donnie because they both recognize he's got the same spark as them of struggling against a system of enforced conformity. They are both rankling under the weight and baggage of the American education system every bit as much as their students do and I think they appreciate that Donnie as a student still has the freedom to say some of the things they themselves are also thinking but cannot give voice too without losing their jobs. The science teacher especially clearly loves seeing Donnie's engagement with the thought experiments of time travel and does what he can to encourage Donnie's curiosity. But the moment the subject takes on any hint of potentially being religious in nature, the teacher is barred by the oppressive American system from continuing to foster that engagement without risking his entire career.

Also the science teacher pointing out that infants may need darkness to develop was to show how he's both fostering his students creativity but also still encouraging them to think critically about aspects of their project they may not have considered. We have a natural circadian rhythm that determines our sleep cycle and exposure to darkness plays a role in regulating it. He was engaging with his students the way a good teacher should even as the system hes working under doesn't promote doing that.

Everyone asking about why Grandma Death walks out in the road every day in front of the traffic to check her empty mailbox, and not one person asking "Why don't we take 15 minutes to move her mailbox so she doesn't have to cross the road". I'm not sure it was an intentional metaphor in the movie, but it's a damn good one.

I'm 90% sure the reference to asexuality about the smurfs is meant to be refering to asexual reproduction in non-human biology, not the asexuality of human sexualality, the T in LGBT was still barely accepted by the other three letters in the pantheon at the time this movie came out, A didn't come along for another decade, so the chances of it being in a fairly mainstream if oddball movie is vanishingly slim.

Donnie Darko is one of my fav 5 movies of all time. Thank you for the amazing and insightful commentary in this movie. I would like to point out that the scene between the two teachers (Drew and Noah) discussing Donnie, was in reference to him being the one that flooded the school. And how surprising, but not really surprising that it was Donnie, it fits with what they know of his character. And it's kinda cool how they both keep the knowledge to themselves rather than reporting him.

The theme of conformity is very period-appropriate. Children's programming in the '80s always had the message that going against the herd was wrong. There was always the character who disagreed with the rest of the group and ended up karmically punished for not conforming by the end of the episode.
