  My favourite quote from this war comes from Sir William Batten and was recorded in Pepys’s diary on 19 July 1667, when Dutch warships were still cruising off the English coast in the aftermath of the Raid on the Medway. Pepys wrote:<br><br>“The Dutch fleete are in great squadrons everywhere still about Harwich, and were lately at Portsmouth; and the last letters say at Plymouth, and now gone to Dartmouth to destroy our Straights’ fleete lately got in thither; but God knows whether they can do it any hurt, or no, but it was pretty news come the other day so fast, of the Dutch fleets being in so many places, that Sir W. Batten at table cried, ‘By God,’ says he, ‘I think the Devil shits Dutchmen.’”

  The Anglo-Dutch Wars of the seventeenth century are interesting. Although the Dutch came out on top in both the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch Wars, the century ended with the English fleet overtaking the Dutch navy as the dominant naval force. Interestingly, this was not at all the result of English success against the Dutch at sea, but of the two countries becoming allies.<br><br>After the Third Anglo-Dutch War ended in 1674, the English increasingly realised that they needed the Dutch to prevent Louis XIV from dominating Europe. However, Dutch hopes for a lasting alliance were dashed when James II came to the throne and moved closer to France. In 1688, with support from within England, the Dutch launched a pre-emptive strike on the kingdom. The Royal Navy failed to intercept the invasion fleet, William of Orange landed with a large army, and James&apos;s regime collapsed. William and Mary became king and queen, and England soon joined the Dutch war against France.<br><br>The alliance also led to a division of responsibilities. The Dutch maintained a huge army to fight France on land, while the English increasingly took the lead at sea. Under their naval agreement, England would provide three warships for every two provided by the Dutch. In was in this way that the Dutch gave up their decades-long attempt to match the English fleet
