I strongly believe that this story should never be forgotten. Mike did a great job telling it.

It's haunting to think that there may have been instances after this where U-boat commanders wanted to help survivors but didn't because they feared suffering a similar fate and that it may have led to more needless casualties because of it

imagine being a survivor and seeing the vessel that sank the ship you were in, this time coming to help, it must've been surreal

How perfectly tragic. Thank you for telling us this story, Mike.

A sobering reminder that not all heroes are on the winning side, and not all villains are on the losing side. The fate of the Laconia was a terrible one, although thanks to Hartenstein and his U-156 crew, there were survivors to tell the tale.

I've always said that Hartenstein was a decent man trying to do the decent thing in the middle of a gross indecency.

The wild part is that even after issuing the "Laconia order" this very same submarine crew did it again one more time, saving survivors of ship they sunk, no matter the consequences.

Very tragic and sad incident. The British also committed these kind of terrible attacks. The RAF would shoot down clearly marked unarmed German Luftwaffe seaplanes painted white with red crosses on their fuselage and wings who were trying to rescue downed airmen in the English Channel. Those stories shouldn't be forgotten either.

Thank you for telling this story. I have always been touched by this story, and Hartenstein's utter humanity at a time when of course his job involved indirectly killing people. How the Americans could have done this is shocking to me, as it was completely obvious that it was a rescue operation and the U-156 wasn't acting hostile in any sense. This incident is very little known about and deserves a higher profile.

A retelling of the Laconia, in this economy? Yes, please.
