What do you think is harder to grieve: the family member you’ve lost, or the relationship you wish you could have had?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I will never understand what I did to deserve this. Mourning the living is the worst

It’s also important to break trauma bonds with people no matter who they are to you. The grief is crippling but self respect is more important than staying in connection with abusive people. Do not chase, do not put up with disrespect and do not chase the crumbs of love. There are people who will love you in the way you deserve- give your time and attention to those who reciprocate your kindness and loyalty. We are mourning a fantasy of who that lost person is in our lives. They never loved us the way we thought they did.

Even when they reach out, you're still like 'what's the point to any of this?'

You can’t win when someone interprets your sincere love as manipulation and respecting their boundaries as abandonment.

Parent ailienation syndrome - it's awful and nobody understands it so it's additionally isolating. It's killing me.

As a grief therapist practicing in the U.S., I have seen a significant increase in family estrangement. It often presents as grief. Ambiguous loss, or living loss, is profoundly painful. Thank you for providing language, education, and validation for those navigating an experience that is often misunderstood and minimized.
