You call it "Football" but hardly kick the ball, And you call it a "touchdown" when you don't have to touch the ball downwards, it's always made me chuckle :)

My old man was stationed wit the RAF in Germany post WW2 - 1950s, and they played rugby and American football with the American army stationed in Germany. In both games, the RAF won. When I asked him why he thought the British won he said that the rugby players knew how to fall and take tackles. The Americans without all the protection were, in his opinion, afraid of physical contact.

“Rugby is a hooligan’s sport played by gentleman, football is a gentleman’s sport played by hooligans”

The term “touch down” originated in rugby, because the ball has to touch the ground to score. American football takes the easy way out.

I love Rugby Union. I've been a fan since the late 1960s when my then boyfriend played for a local team. The boyfriend didn't last but my love for the game is as strong as ever.

 Some basic rules :
1- No forward passes allowed
2- When a player hits the ground he can't contest the ball and become the offplay line (reason why you see them pushing the ball as far behind they can and putting their body in front of the opponent to make a screen)
3- You need to put the ball on the ground to score (if the opponent put his hand under and their is no contact for example, it's denied)
4- The touch line is out of bound, so if you pass it it's out of bound
5- You're offplay if you're ahead of the ball, on a kick someone behind the kick or the kicker must accelerate to put back in play the players ahead of the kick
6- You can't tackle a player without the ball

what you would refer to as a touch down is a "try" in rugby. Until about a month ago I didn't know anything about rugby either. My first rugby reaction video got 30,000 views. Since then I put out six or seven more and I've become a huge fan. Love the video, There's a lot of other rugby content you should check out!

Absolutely correct about the injuries of American football vs rugby. The padding and helmets in American football give a false sense of protection, whereas in rugby, without the pads and helmets, the players learn how to tackle safely, effectively, efficiently. And the hits in rugby are just as hard.

Those 'helmets' that you occasionally see are not head protection. They are to prevent cauliflower ears.
Our (American) term 'touchdown' comes from before our version of the game developed. You have to actually touch the ball down in goal to score.
The touchdown is called a TRY. It's called that because way back in time doing so was not actually a score. All you got for your efforts was a free kick at the goal post. You got an attempt, a free try to score.

There is a lot more rugby in the USA than you think. There has been a professional league here for about a decade. It's called Major League Rugby. This year they've started a women's professional league. Many colleges and universities give out scholarships (men & women). High schools have been playing, in some places, for over 30 years.
If you kive in a midsized city no matter where there is most probably a at least one armature club there.
Rugby is all over America but it is basically unseen. The news networks ignore it.
The 'problem' is that the game doesn't stop. Play continues on and on. There are no time outs. Main stream media hates it. There is no place to put your commercials. Football is a 60 minute game that takes 4 hours to play. Rugby is an 80 minute game that takes 95 minutes to play..
