What makes the play by Teddy Thoma at 03:09 so cold are two Rugby rules. The ball can't be passed forward with the hands but can be kicked forward and a player can't touch the line while holding the ball but can run past the line without the ball. So when he felt that the momentum would would move him past the line (into touch) he kicked the ball to himself and ran to catch it and score.

Love to see people learning about rugby for the first time, hoping you put up some more content!

The guy that got picked up and bullied was trapping the ball in between his legs, preventing the other team from playing quickly. That's why his teammates or the refs don't help him, he was on the wrong intentionally

To put it to some sort of context: everybody and everyone is a running-back for 80 minutes with a little break at 40. No commercials or whatever you call it in the states. And it is played all around the world. That is why there is something called the World Cup. Cheers from Italy.

American football was created from rugby. Our game was seen as being to aggressive so helmets, pads and foward passing was made 😂

American Football was derived from Rugby; Rugby's been played for 200+ years worldwide. You can only pass backwards / lateral and you can't fumble the ball forwards. You can kick the ball in any direction. You can’t tackle a player not in possession so no intentional blocking like in the NFL. Tackles must be shoulder-height or lower with an attempt to wrap your arms (or you get penalized and even sent off). There are no downs like in the NFL - when a player is tackled they have to release the ball and the tackler must release them; other players secure or gain possession by pushing each other over the ball (called a ruck). Play is only stopped when a team scores, the balls goes out of bounds or an infringement occurs and the ref blows their whistle to award a penalty, free kick, line-out or a scrum to restart the play. Currently the best (men's 15) team in the world are the South African Springboks, but historically the New Zealand All Blacks were the best. There are some really good compilation videos from channels like Die Hard Rugby or Andrew Forde, or you can check out some of these notable legends from the many over the decades: Jonah Lomu, Cheslin Kolbe, Dan Carter, Eben Etzebeth, Antoine Dupont, Bryan Habana, Brian O'Driscoll, Jason Robinson, Christian Cullen, Joshua Tuisova, Danie Gerber, Sebastian Chabal.... the list goes on and on...

One point lots of Americans miss about rugby and it’s highlighted in the first clip: rugby is played at an amateur level in clubs across the world. And it’s played with pretty much the same laws, the same equipment (no pads / helmets). And it’s played hard. I’m not aware of any amateur club scene for American football? It’s played in schools, colleges and professionally.

Thank you for your video. I'm 60 years old and played my last game 6 days ago. Love this game. It teaches courage, respect and endurance. Oddly enough after 50 years of playing I have not a single permanent injury as a result. Many bruises over the years but still going hard. The game which is played in heaven. Some of the rules: you can only carry or kick the ball forwards. Passes must be backwards. A "try" is a "touchdown", but literally, if the ball is carried into the "in goal" or endzone the try can only be scored of there is downward pressure on the ball upon the ground, literally a touch down. Players may be tackled in possession of the ball. Once tackled they must release the ball so there can be a contest for possession. This is called a ruck. If a player remains on his/her feet then it is called a maul. Ladies are encouraged to play and they are just as tough as the boys. They develop a wonderful confidence when they find out how tough they are. Worth looking up.

quite a few tackles in this compilation that would nowadays be considered illegal along the current rugby laws. But even so, still a crazy tough game. Love the guy who was getting treatments, stood up, made a tackle and went back to getting treatment. Would probably never see that in other sports.

Check out the All Blacks, New Zealand the most successful international rugby union team, and the most feared with over 500 wins from 652 international tests.
