Ironically, Anne gets the last laugh on Henry twice over; not only did her daughter Elizabeth go on to be one of the longest and greatest reigning Monarchs; but whole Henry's bloodline ends with Elizabeth, Anne's still lives on through her sister's descendants; which includes Prince William.

So fun fact! Anne is very immature because its thought that she was anywhere between 15 and 21(i think) when she met Henry! So, she acts like a petulant teen because its likely that she WAS one, and wouldnt understand the intricacies of what she was getting into with the 31 year old king

Anne Boleyn was incredibly smart and actually interested in politics, despite what the song may want you to think. (Writers of the show admitted before that they kinda regret leaning into stereotypical version of how she's usually portrayed, tho tbh the song slaps) Even during her life there were a lot of rumors circling around her, mostly from people who loved Catherine and refused to accept Anne as the new queen. Rumors include: her being a witch, her having a 6th finger and other kinds of deformities on her body, giving birth to a deformed fetus and so on. Anne actually did have a boy, but she miscarried him at 15 weeks, and interestingly, on the same day Catherine of Aragon was buried. (thus no, she didn't wear yellow to a funeral, that was spread by her haters after she was executed) She was accused of adultery with 5 men, including her own brother, and executed at the Tower of London along with the men and one of her ladies in waiting, who was accused of helping her with secret meetings. Most historians think that the charges were made up bc Henry wanted to move onto next woman, bc Anne couldn't produce a boy to succeed the line. Ironically enough, it's her only surviving daughter, Elizabeth I that went on to rule for decades and ended the Tudor line by refusing to marry and bear children.

One important thing. Both "beheaded" queens were very young. Anne's song is playful, teen-like, because she actually WAS a teen.

Non-family friendly warning for this comment In the actual performance, when Anne is repeating "What was I meant to do?" in the final pre-chorus, she actually stops the song to say "NO WAIT I ACTUALLY THINK HE'S SERIOUSLY GOING TO CUT MY HEAD OFF... I guess he just... really liked my head-" And does a... particular motion with her hand and mouth to drive the point home

1. When Anne was executed, Henry actually hired a very experienced swordsman to do the deed, at least giving her a quick death, which was good because most executions by beheading at the time were... not. Katherine Howard later would take several swings to get the deed done because she was not afforded this "luxury". 2. The song Greensleeves was actually not written by Henry for Anne, because it follows an Italian composing style that would not make it to England for several more decades. 3. Its been said already but Anne was actually very into politics and world events like that. She knew several languages and was very intelligent. 4. The legend that Anne had a sixth finger is almost certainly not true, confirmed when she was exhumed about two hundred years later- FIVE FINGERS BESTIE

I always experience a bittersweet feeling when it comes to this song, that is because I think it captures the twisted and tragic irony of Anne's story and memory; It's my favorite out of the whole musical and Anne is also my favorite character, yet it's so tragic how, despite the many years which have gone by, her image has been twisted and shaped based on the false rumors Henry spread to make himself look like the victim of the situation. In actuality, she repeatedly rejected him during the time in which he was sending her letters, being that she was already in love with another man. She literally rejected him and, in response to one of his letters wrote: "Your wife I shall not be, both in respect of mine own unworthiness, and also because you have a queen already. Your mistress I will not be". Though of course, Henry was a king, and the Boleyn's would've never turned down an opportunity like this considering how desperate Henry was to have Anne. Sooo...well, she didn't have much of a choice and played the game she had to. On the day of her coronation she was mocked and seen as a snake, immediately gaining the people's displease considering how highly they thought of queen Catherine at the time. Catherine herself didn't even resent her, she even stated that people would one day "lament her (Anne's) case". Despite the initial obstacles though Anne still tried her hardest to fulfill the traditional role of a queen at the best of her capabilities: she gave alms to the poor, provided for widows, favored investments in the arts and scolarships, even went as far as to sew shirts and smocks for the needy. Though, the public still hated her, viewing her as an heretic and an adultress. Still, in all of this, Henry, as always, was yearning for a male heir, something which Anne unfortunately also failed to provide, just like Catherine before her, giving birth to a healthy girl instead, Elizabeth I; added to that was the fact that she would've miscarried two other times after the birth of Elizabeth, thus making Henry start to question his decision to marry her, and of course, he went to look for "solutions" outside of marriage as always. The request for the annulment of Henry's marriage to Anne was denied, and things spiraled out of control and eventually Henry, supported and helped by the likes of Thomas Cromwell, the most notorious of Anne's allies, decided it was time to find an alternative way out. Subsequently, Cromwell made  a move against her, presenting false and unfounded accusations of adultery, incest, and even plotting against the king himself. Needless to say Henry was waiting for nothing less than this, and was easily convinced by Cromwell's words, so declaring for Anne to be arrested and later beheaded. Anne declared her innocence up until the very end, though unfortunately for the woman, the court which was responsible for hosting her trial was composed of only men, enemies of hers nonetheless, who despised and disliked her for the same reasons mentioned earlier. She was arrested on May 2nd 1536 and held prisoner in the Tower of London, where, three years prior, she had awaited her coronation. On the eve of her execution, according to the Constable of the Tower, Anne joked “I heard say the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck”. Henry had granted her the ‘small mercy’ of dy1ng at the hands of a skilled swordsman rather than an executioner’s axe. The execution of a queen for treason was an unprecedented event, and Henry and Cromwell ensured that it was carefully stage managed within the walls of the Tower, rather than at the public execution sites outside. Finally, On 19 May 1536, Anne was beheaded on Tower Green. Her final reported words were uncontroversial, “I am come hither to d1e, for according to the law and by the law I am judged to d1e, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I pray God save the King, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never.”, words most likely born from Anne's consideration for the safety of her infant daughter Elizabeth. Henry then went on to marry Jane Seymour, a mere 11 days after Anne's d34th. She was a victim of her time unfortunately, and as Catherine of Aragon predicted, people are still lamenting her tale to this day

I don't have as much facts for Anne boleyn as i would like to BUT here IS a few that are interesting. Surprisingly, ALL of the queens are intertwined with eachother, either by blood line or other circustances (This isn't mentioned on the musical at any point so i might as well tell you) You already know how Catherine Of A. and Anne B. shared time in the castle, but funilly enough, Jane S. spend time with them there aswell as she was a lady in waiting during both of their times as queens, and it's said that Henry cheated on Anne with Jane before her beheading. While A. Of Cleves didn't had the role of queen for to long, she had K. Howard as one of her ladies in waiting who, TURNS OUT, was Anne Boleyn's cousin (The Six fandom calls them the beheaded cousins) last but not least, even tho C. Parr didn't get to meet any of the others in person, C. Of Aragon was her god-mother, as Parr's mom used to be one of Aragon's ladies in waiting, and decided to name Parr after her. It's just so surprising that, one ways or another, all the queens were conected to one another more than just being one of Henry's wives👑

I know I am a year late but what makes Annes execution worse is that it is most likely that she did not actually cheat on him but was instead beheaded because she couldn't get a son after 5 miscariaged and a daughter(which Henry obviously wasn't fond of) but Henry used her 'cheating' as an excuse. Anne also did not run away and instead accepted death because that in someway meant to protect her daughter.

Just a heads up ( no pun) don’t take all the lyrics literally. Henry did not have a threesome situation with Katherine and Anne. He begged Anne to be his mistress but she said she would be his wife and nothing else which Henry found very attractive. Anne was allegedly heard making fun of Henry’s manhood, she didn’t actually say it to his face! In her life while innocent of the charges against her, Anne played a game and lost 😞

You had questions, and I hope you don't mind me providing some answers. This version of Anne captures her charisma and confidence really well, but as so many people in the comments have said she was an incredibly intelligent woman. She kept Henry at bay for seven years from when he first showed interest in her, her sister Mary had already been picked up and discarded by him and she was not going to let the same thing happen to her. She wanted a ring on her finger, or else nothing. Henry wasn't used to being refused and it just made him more and more desperate to have her. Eventually they did end up sleeping together before they were married, Anne was pregnant when she was crowned Queen, but it's commonly believed that she only allowed it once she could see her way clear to the throne. She was a big supporter of the Reformation, the European movement away from Roman Catholic worship, and she supposedly owned many banned books about religion which she could have got into serious trouble for. People who supported the Reformation believed that holy scripture should be allowed to be translated into other languages besides Latin so that everyone could understand the Bible, because the general population of peasants who hadn't been educated in Latin only had the priest's word for what the Bible said. She managed to interest Henry in the books, which apparently helped when he broke from the Roman Catholic church and set up the Church of England. Yes, he genuinely did set up his own religion to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. It made his later divorce from Anne of Cleves so much easier. In the end the main thing that proved to be Anne's downfall was that she didn't give Henry a son. She had one daughter and multiple miscarriages, and Henry got bored very quickly. They weren't the most harmonious of couples, both had hot tempers and arguments became more and more frequent especially when Henry was caught flirting with other women. The charges of adultery Henry used to condemn her were almost certainly trumped up; he even accused her of sleeping with her own brother. Most historians believe that he was just using any and every method he could to ensure that he could get rid of her. By this time he'd noticed Jane Seymour among Anne's ladies in waiting and wanted her instead, exactly in the same way he'd first noticed Anne when she was lady-in-waiting to Catherine. In a small act of mercy he arranged for a French swordsman to behead Anne rather than have her suffer through beheading by axe, which wasn't always completed in one go and thus could be a much more brutal method. Anne's head was taken off in one go, and there's a famous story that her lips were seen to still be moving in prayer after she was beheaded. To help with "Wearing Yellow to a Funeral", yellow was the colour of mourning in Spain and after the announcement of Catherine's death Henry and Anne dressed in yellow and celebrated. Yellow was obviously not a mourning colour in England, so it was basically a smack in the face to Catherine's memory.
