  Feel like the reason jinshi doesn’t understand the fact of hiding sex appeal is because jinshi is nothing but sex appeal. He’s used to ensure the other concubines remain faithful. So it’s kinda like the direct flip of maomao because he’s accepted that’s all that he is and thus uses it as a weapon.

  Most shows wish they could have half the character development  this show has. Maomao is my favorite MC of all time.

  I love the scene with mei mei though, because if you pay attention, maomao gave her the choice, she didn't tell meimei to show her father where her mother was, she gave the flower to her father but she gave mei mei the choice and meimei chose to give up her future, I think it really ties together how sweet she is.

  It was really sad she learned to stop crying as a child because her adoptive sisters would leave her to cry and only tended to mao mao after their work was done for the day.

  I think... something important that might be missed... it's likely he was preforming this ceremony AS the Moon Prince. He picked MaoMao over hiding his identity. He SHOWED HIS FACE

  i've seen many analyses on this show, and yet this is the first one to actually grasp this concept. A lot of people comment on the power dynamics of the show, how maomao is just so smart and that she is a good character because she has some flaws here or there. And it drives me crazy that the show is not about power,  what makes it good is not character flaws either, or overpowered characters. But the philosophical exploration on what it means to live, when you have no control of your life.

  There is also 1 little thing you didn&apos;t mention about love.<br>Maomao herself is a product of love, one that backfired.<br>Lakan and Fengxian actually fell in love, he liked her for her beauty, her personality and her smarts, as one of the best prostitutes in the verdigris house she did not take clients to her bed, she was a virgin....and she loved Lakan back.<br>She loved him enough to hatch a risky plan with him to lower her price from something he couldn&apos;t pay at the time to 0 so they could be together......and they did not have the luxury to wait until Lakan got the position he has in the show proper.<br>Any rich man with enough money could come and buy Fengxian if they could pay her astronomical, at the time, figure.<br>It was an extremely risky plan that backfired because Lakan was suddenly sent away to the front for several years before he could come get Fengxian. After she had Maomao and she was, in the eyes of the house, ruined she was made to take clients into her bed, which is how she caught syphilis and her life was destroyed......and she took it out on the only avaliable target....Maomao

  I thought Mei Mei broke down because she was the serving girl of FengXian for YEARS before she became a high-class courtesan. She has known Lakan for years and finally getting to see her big sister who raised her and she watched suffer for years get her happy ending was a relief but also really sad because of how tragic their story was. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>At least from the anime, that&apos;s what I saw. You have to be very observnt in the anime because we see Mei Mei in Lakan&apos;s story but he can&apos;t recognise faces so she was a Go piece and we don&apos;t see her face until her breakdown on Feng Xian finally getting her happy ending.

  I think another really important thing that not a lot of people talk about is why the granny is so fixated on making Maomao a courtesan, on a superficial level MaoMao not only has the training and knowledge of the three princesses of the Red Light district and an imperial doctor but her natural knowledge and understanding of how to navigate and use people is something extremely difficult to learn and train, as well as being the descendent of one of the highest standing courtesans she&apos;s practically sudo nobility in her own right meaning that her value is already extremely high in terms of bloodline, training, and intelligence but realistically speaking its also the only way she can ensure that the closest person she has to a granddaughter can remain safe and cared for, Mao Mao even says that high standing courtesans could even keep their purity till their sold if they have a high enough value something MaoMao would have immediately and the likelihood of her even seeing to guest would become almost zero unless somebody dropped a boat load of cash and got approval from granny in the first place

  In the light novel, there&apos;s a passage in which Gaoshun reflects on why Jinshi let Maomao go. You know how Jinshi was always obsessed with one toy and wouldn&apos;t play with anything else and would cry for days and days when taken away from him. He thinks that maybe, this time, he chose to let her go as a way of refusing to objectify her and treat her like another one of his toys. Then he is of course overjoyed when she tells him that she actually wanted to come back and never wanted to leave in the first place ❣️
