  The author of the LNs (the original source) stated that she made a mishmash of dinasties clothing so people did not think this was trying to picture something that actually happened, to be as respectful as possible

  You actually guessed correctly! Later in the season the bearded doctor says that their family business of paper-making went down and he was &apos;sold&apos; to the castle&apos;s apothecary instead of one of his sisters, so he did become a eunuch later in life! Amazing deduction there!

  Just a note on Maomao being picked up on the street and sold to the palace without much screening/training: In universe the palace was dealing with a significant manpower shortage in the rear palace due to the creation of eunuchs being outlawed recently, so I think the lack of training and vetting of Maomao was related to the rear palace being desperate for more girls to fill in for the low level labor eunuchs would normally take care of. I don&apos;t remember if this is explicitly talked about in the show or the source novels but its a reasonable inference.

  I think the Chinese court dramas have a lot of potential outside of China. There&apos;s already an obsession with &quot;medieval&quot; stories out in the West, where I had to put the word in scare quotes because the moviemakers are more concerned with a certain aesthetic than with historical accuracy. The Chinese court dramas are so sumptuous, the screen is so full of beautiful colors in every shot, and the costumes SO much more interesting than what regular people wear today, I can see why it makes for such appealing viewing.
