A big red flag that would fall under the Empathy category is, the inability or willingness to apologize. It will tell you so much about a person.

My ex-wife was incredibly abusive to me (verbally, physically, emotionally) in our 10 years together. We have been divorced for 3 months now and it's amazing how wonderful life is.

#12 how they drive with you as a passenger! If they are scaring you and they don't care or get mad if you say anything

The last person I dated ticked most of the boxes on this list. Thankfully, I got out after 11 months. After almost 4 yrs of healing & working on myself, I realized that a long-term friend also ticked several items on this list, and I ended the friendship. I'm no longer allowing behavior like this in my life. People who display these behaviors don't get access to me anymore. Period.

I never used to think he was manipulating me, but once I started reading/learning about emotional abuse (just last year!) & that it's a vicious cycle of patterns, I started recognizing his patterns of manipulation. What I noticed in particular is that whenever he thinks he needs me more, that's when he's willing to "talk about things." But as soon as he doesn't think he needs me anymore, that willingness to "talk" & reach an understanding quickly fades away. It's saddening to my heart & proves he doesn't really love me.

I am a male going through this with my wife. Remember, men can become victims of emotional abuse as well. Took my friend to see what was going on and call it out.

My son’s dad emotionally abuses me but then he’s sweet, good to me and then he treats me like shit.

Some of the reactive red flags you stated as a victim of gaslighting and manipulation. Became exactly what I said, reactive feelings of it bursts due to being constantly manipulated and gaslighted for years. They love to trigger you, so you continue to look like the unstable one. It's sick and twisted.

Omg - it’s been a minute since I’ve listened because I’m out of the toxic relationship now. Listening to this brought back so many terrible memories of living through that. Life is so much better now & I hope that anyone on that cusp of getting out pulls the trigger. Life is so much better on the other side where peace is. Thanks for your persistence in educating everyone, Steph. You were part of my journey from a couple years ago. ❤

I have struggled with a relationship with a certain relative my whole life and there has always had emotional abuse. Once I started to work on myself and heal, I have learned to set boundaries and stick to them and I got so strong and confident that I was able to cut out this relationship without feeling guilty, since there is no possibility of a healthy comunication or resolution with this person. It is really a freeing emotion!
