I appreciate you telling people that matcha actually originated in China, not Japan.

A lot of Japanese matcha actually comes from China. It's shipped to them, and they package it, do the organic certifications for Japanese seals, and with those two things, they're able to say "manufactured in Japan." The economics of how popular matcha has become makes it impossible for Japan itself to sustain all of the "Japanese" matcha on the market because the actual suitable climate region in Uji is quite limited. In blind taste testing, most of the "premium" matcha (there is no actual designation for what qualifies as ceremonial grade), especially those with umami, come from China because they have diversity in suitable climate Guizhou, Hunan, Fujian, Yunnan that yields specific flavor profiles.

Some Japan lovers will be very disappointed that Matcha is actually from China.

This is one of Amy’s most informative and content-rich videos yet — and the ice cream-dropping mishap at the end is classic Amy, instantly reminding me of the time she dropped a sea cucumber on the restaurant floor.:goodvibes:

When the viewer is learning more about food, culture, and history from a YouTube channel than National Geographic and The Food Network put together, the creator is clearly doing something right. Thanks for the deep research that goes into your videos, Amy, found this one especially insightful with so many TIL moments. Keep up the awesomeness!!!

Matcha originated in Song dynasty China over 1000 years ago and the tea and ceremony was brought to Japan by Buddhist monk Eisai studying in China. It fell out of favor in China due to inferior taste and complex production process. Matcha and other types of tea's was reserved to the elite in Japan but became popular around the 1400's. Tea culture in Japan began by imitating Tang dynasty customs using Chinese ceramics and preparation methods and subsequent development through time led to a unique but familiar modern day Japanese tea culture.

I'm Mexican, and my fiancé is German. I've been slowly trying to convince him to visit China with me. Your videos make it so much easier to show him how amazing it is!
