Matcha has Chinese roots, but modern matcha is largely a Japanese development. The practice of grinding tea into powder and whisking it with hot water was popular in Song-dynasty China (960–1279). Buddhist monks brought this tea tradition and tea seeds to Japan, where it was developed over centuries into the matcha production and tea-ceremony culture we recognize today.

0:06 - Japan = Matcha + Tea ritual + perfection ; China= Mass production.
This is how they paint China down to mere industrial mass production and ignoring Matcha and Art of Tea is Chinese in origin.

the historian Joseph Edkins pointed out that, unlike China, Japan had never invented anything like paper, printing, gunpowder, or the compass.

And many of the things that we (at least Westerners) associate with the Japanese had their origin in China, like origami, bonsai tree cultivation, and tea ceremonies. Other things that we know are Chinese, like noodles, tofu, soy sauce, pagoda architecture, silk cultivation and weaving, porcelain, and papermaking, deeply influenced and helped define Japanese culture.

It is originally from China, the plant, culture and so on.

Japan’s legacy? Matcha originally came from China!
So did much of Japan’s writing, sakura, architecture, Buddhism, kimono, musical instruments, papermaking, calligraphy, chopsticks, and Go. The list goes on...😂

Some Asian countries that historically absorbed a great deal of Chinese culture and technology are now, driven partly by nationalism, trying to rebrand parts of that heritage as their own creations.
Matcha is just one example. South Korea even sought UNESCO recognition for its traditions related to the Dragon Boat Festival(江陵端午祭) and for a branch of ceramics (高丽青瓷) with clear Chinese origins.😂

Culture is not just defined by who started it; it is defined by who kept it alive, shaped it, and shared it with the modern world. During the Ming Dynasty, China completely shifted away from powdered tea. The art of powdered tea essentially vanished in China for centuries. Meanwhile, Japan spent nearly a thousand years cultivating, refining, and building an entire spiritual and cultural framework around it (the Japanese Tea Ceremony, or Chado). They also developed unique agricultural techniques, like shading the tea plants before harvest to boost chlorophyll and L-theanine, which gives matcha its vibrant green color and specific umami flavor. Matcha produced today is a style of tea that was kept alive and made famous by Japan. So the Chinese have essentially lost their claim to matcha being "theirs."

It’s like Japanese Fuji apple.
It is grown in China , Taiwan as well at half the price.
Japanese have small plots of agricultural land , so everything grown is expensive.
