  The significance of war drums in battle: They were tools used to communicate orders across loud fields, keep soldiers in step, and boost courage while frightening enemies. Before radios or modern signals, the loud sound of a drum cut through the noise of fighting.

  Remember that the author, Tolkien, was a WW1 veteran, and his experiences influenced his writing--the illusions of the dead in the marshes reflected the sight of dead bodies in water-filled shell craters on the battlefield of the Somme, where he fought. &nbsp;The four hobbits returning home, with the rest of the hobbits clueless about what they went through, is also reflective of a war veteran&apos;s experiences. &nbsp;And coming home and being permanently changed, often for the worse, like Frodo was.

  Several years went by before Frodo left for the undying lands. He talked to all the people in the fellowship, and got their sides of the events of what happened. This is how he was able to put everything in the book so that the story can be told in its entirety.

  Don&apos;t worry, Sam goes to Valinor as well, though Tolkien never confirms Frodo and Sam are reunited. He was technically a Ring-bearer for a short time so that&apos;s why he&apos;s able to go and live the rest of his days there. He left after Rosie died and gave the book to his daughter Elanor to pass down the history of Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam.

  Actually, the Istari, or Wizards, are Maiar (s. Maia). They are angelic beings sent to Middle Earth by the Valar (the “gods”) to fight Sauron. They are given the forms of old men and are constrained from using their full powers, and are instead meant to instruct and inspire the Free Peoples of Middle Earth. You meet Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White in these films, but there are three more: Radagast the Brown and the two Blue Wizards, Romestamo and Morinhetar. The Wizards are often known by multiple names depending on the region or race of Middle Earth. Gandalf, for instance, is also known as Mithrandir (Grey Pilgrim) to the Elves and the men of Gondor, Tharkun to the Dwarves, and Incanus (which means north-spy) in the South of Middle Earth. Saruman is also known as Curunir (man of skill). They also all have their original names as Maiar: Gandalf = Olorin, Saruman = Curumo, Radagast= Aiwendil, and the Blues = Alatar and Pallando.

  They kinda skipped this part, but Even Gandalf has to ask Shadowfax permission to ride because he&apos;s basically as sapient as a person. There&apos;s zero doubt in calling him the Lord of all horses. Brego is also a relative of his, but not even Theoden got to ride Shadowfax.

  Bilbo had the ring for 60 years. &nbsp;Frodo had it for 17 years between the time Gandalf told him to keep it secret, keep it safe and when he came back and tested the ring in the fire.

  Christopher Lee didn&apos;t make a noise when getting stabbed in the back for this reason: He told Peter Jackson that he refused to make a sound while getting stabbed because he has been in real combat (he even helped capture Nazis), and soldiers don&apos;t &nbsp;gasp or scream when getting stabbed in that spot because the lungs deflate. He had actually watched people die that way, and they were silent when they did. He wasn&apos;t only a great actor, but he was an opera singer and had a heavy metal band in his eighties. The only other person that would have performed metal at that age was Ozzy...if he would have lived until his nineties like Lee did.

  The ring Gandalf wore was one of the 3 Elven rings of power. He bore Narya, the ring of fire. Among other things, it gave him the power to inspire courage and hope into the hearts of mortals around him. When he fell, the group lost not only his inspiring, encouraging presence just from who he was, but that power from the ring he wore. It was really devastating for them in ways beyond grief.
