Such a touching song! David Gates wrote this song in memory of his father who died in 1963 & never saw the success he achieved with Bread. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".

Of course this song is not new to me but I grew up thinking this was about a romance. I just found out at almost 70 years old this was about his father. My friend told me this last year because he lost his father when he was 9 and he still got choked up talking about this song. Thats what real music can do. A song more than 50 years ago still evoked that reaction from my friend who is also almost 70.

His voice is so raw so cure so soft and as he’s making his point all of a sudden, the chorus hits hard as if emphasize it. It’s just a magical song it really is.

His father died while he was on tour out on the road. The love and respect for his father and the fact he was not with him is heartbreaking.<br>His voice is outstanding and his writing skills are amazing. Absolutely beautiful and touching.
