Bread was VERY POPULAR in the 1970's.  They were considered soft rock and climbed the Billboard charts many times.

Yes, all we had was radio. And Bread was on the radio a lot! We loved it.

Lots of people mistake this song as a love song, it is in a way but to a parent. David Gates the lead singer wrote it in memory of his father. He stated to a friend "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record 'Everything I Own' about him."
